STORY OF THE “DRAGONFLY”:
Purchased brand-new in Woodland Hills, California, it was used as a daily driver with a local work commute throughout the years. Eventually, the engine was replaced in the late 90’s, at which time it became a weekend/hobby car. In 2011, restoration began with extensive interior, exterior, and mechanical updates. From then on, relatively few miles were driven. In 2019, it was gifted to a close family friend, a VW enthusiast/restorer, who transported it to Washington to continue with its revival. Several updates were made, including: paint, engine, interior, electrical, and brakes. Last month, he drove it down from Washington and returned it to its original owner as a surprise gift. As awesome as this car is, it is not getting much use anymore, and we’ve decided to sell it so that another family can truly enjoy it and continue the legacy of the “Dragonfly.”

ENGINE AND DRIVETRAIN:
Less than 5,000 miles have been driven on the recently overhauled 1.5L engine. Three years ago, the engine was pulled and refreshed. Not a complete rebuild, but anything that wasn’t perfect was repaired or replaced. Starts right up, runs smoothly, and accelerates through the gears without missing a beat. It still leaks a small amount of oil after driving, and following a trip you’ll get a few drops. Transmission shifts smoothly, and clutch operates normally. Replaced oil cooler. Replaced clutch cable. Brand new 30 PICT Carburetor. The odometer recently stuck at 21,991, so the estimated total miles throughout the entire vehicle history is 126,000.
——
INTERIOR:
The restored interior is IMMACULATE! Nearly everything has been replaced: carpeting, seat cushions, upholstery (custom engraved dragonflies in the front seats), STUNNING headliner (not one wrinkle), door panels, dash, glove box, stock-replica digital radio (with audio input for your phone), visors, handles, etc… Custom wired speaker boxes. Windows roll up and down, but a bit stiff on rolling up the driver’s side.
——
EXTERIOR:
Body is mostly straight and the new paint glistens alongside the new front and rear bumpers. At first glance it looks pristine, but upon close inspection, there are some imperfections in the paint and body, i.e., some small dings and a small patch of rust repair work at the rear window sill (refer to the last three pictures for the most significant ones). Overall, the chrome and trim is in good condition, with some aging evident. Fiberglass reinforced floor pans and trunk area. “DRAGN FLY” license plate is not official - only decorative. Door locks are operational.
——
LIGHTING AND ELECTRICAL:
All lighting is operational, including wipers. Wiring is mostly original, with upgrades and repairs along the way. New 4-way flasher switch, flasher relay, turn signal assembly and associated wiring to the signals & headlights. New battery and Bosch solid state regulator.
——
STEERING, SUSPENSION, EXHAUST & BRAKES:
Replaced ball joints, tie rod boots, struts, steering coupler, and muffler assembly. Rides smooth up to 55mph, and then steering wheel begins to vibrate (wheel balancing or alignment issue?). Replaced drums, master cylinder, brake lines, and pads.
——
UNDER THE FRONT HOOD:
Replaced OEM Gas tank, OEM sending unit, and all associated hoses. Newly carpeted hood area & spare tire. Front hood lock receiver and release cable are removed, but the hood locks in place with the handle assembly.
——
Also included with purchase:
1. Original Jack & Lug nut sleeve
2. Original Owner’s manual
3. Hanes repair manual
4. Indoor Car Cover – new condition
5. OEM Solex 30 PICT Carburetor – 11 years old
6. Rubber “LadyBug” floormats (Set of 4)
——
Overall, the Dragonfly shows and drives beautifully, and the pictures & video speaks for itself. Although it looks like it, this is not a 100% complete museum quality restoration. There are still are some small projects that can be done to add to its awesomeness. If you are searching for a super clean, fun, well kept, classic VW that you can zip around town and show off to your friends and family, take to local car shows, and be admired by onlookers as a conversation piece, then this car is for you.
