History:
The Willys M38 US Army Jeep, eplaced the World War II models known as MB and GPW. It is a 1/4 Ton 4 × 4 Utility Truck manufactured between 1950 and 1952 with a total production of 45,473 units. The M38 is based on the civilian model CJ3A. Willys designated it an MC. However, his version carried a beefier frame and suspension than the CJ3A. Some were assigned to the Korean theatre of operations and after that conflict was over in the mid 1950s, hey were manufactured for export overseas.
Willys built over 60,000 M38s for Korean War deployment, nd naturally Jeeps were once again in the thick of battle. Though the mostly mountainous terrain of North Korea might have logically influenced the Army to minimize the use of the Jeep, his did not turn out to be the case. In October 1950, he Jeep led the strategic withdrawal from the North when the Chinese entered the war. Once the fighting began along the 38th parallel (the line dividing North Korea and South Korea), he Jeep assumed many new combat and support roles. Some Jeeps were equipped with communications gear that allowed them to be employed in forward positions, irecting air strikes and observation airplanes. With the heavy movement of refugees from the north, he military police also began to rely more on the adaptable Jeep. It could be operated on the paved streets of cities and towns or on the dirt roads of the countryside. The Jeep in Korea proved to be popular as well as the principal means of transportation for both officers and enlisted men.
The M38 was equipped with a 60 hp, 34 cu. in. side-valve four-cylinder engine, hree-speed manual gearbox with two-speed transfer case and four-wheel drive, ive front and rear axles with semi-elliptic leaf springs, nd four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes.
The water fording ventilation system and a waterproof 24 volt electrical system were the major upgrades on the M38 (MC series). These features evolved from the many experimental configurations performed on the WWII Willys (MB series). Its windshield could be folded flat for firing and the body was equipped with a pintle hook for towing and lifting shackles front and rear. The headlights were no longer recessed as on previous models, ut protruded with a guard wire in front. The "pioneer" tools (axe and shovel) which were carried on the MB's driver side were transferred to the passenger side of this vehicle.
