The Willys-Overland Motor Company came to be in 1908 with John Willy purchased Overland Automotive Division from the Standard Wheel Company. He renamed his new venture the Willys-Overland Motor Company. It quickly became the second largest automobile manufacturer, ehind only to the production volume of Ford Motor Company. What Willys-Overland lacked in production numbers, hey made up for in quality and reliability! Particularly when he introduced the Knight sleeve-valve engine in 1914 after completing a 4,500 mile trip throughout England using the Charles Knight designed engine in just 15 days! This special engine ran surprisingly quiet by not having poppet valves, as more dependable by not requiring valve springs that could weaken over time, nd possessed the unique characteristic of increasing in engine compression over time as it developed carbon deposits within the head. This style engine was used in all Willys-Overland vehicles from 1914 through 1933, nly as they tried to survive the Great Depression after filing for bankruptcy. John Willys went on to succeed in multiple other automotive business ventures of course, ut the coveted sleeve-valve engine was gone forever, eaving them highly cherished among collectors today!
We are very excited to offer this 1916 Willys-Overland Knight 88-4 Seven Passenger Touring that has been tucked away in a private Ohio collection since July 1966! Showing just 26,054 miles from new, his largely original example is simply a delight to admire in all respects!
