Monte Carlo Historique Rallye History
Built to FIA Rally Specifications with FIVA Identity Card
By the mid 1960’s, ini Coopers were dominating the European rally scene. With three victories at Monte Carlo (back to back in 1964 and 1965), hese pint size racers were formidable competitors. Their lightweight and decent power combined with great reliability made them a popular choice among drivers. Finding original Cooper Works cars is nearly impossible and even original Cooper S examples are becoming scarcer. To not only have an original Cooper S with loads of rare early Works components, ut also history at the Monte Carlo Historique is a ticket to all kinds of exciting world wide exclusive vintage auto events.
Although we do not know the specifics of this Mini’s early life, e have a suspicion that it might have been involved in rally racing back in the 60’s. There are too many unique components that were usually reserved for Works or competition cars. Furthermore, any of the early Cooper S features like original upholstery/carpet, 20mph speedo, hrome trim, heels (off car), adging, tc. are mostly unrestored. Highlights of unique early/vintage elements to this historic car include:
Aluminum bonnet, oors, nd boot lid
Reinforced rocker box subframe section and jacking points
Aluminum sump guard
4 vintage Lucas auxiliary driving lights
Vintage Lucas rear light
BMC mudflaps
Extra set of Cooper S wheels with Kingston Rally tires mounted
Plexiglas side and rear windows
Plexiglas headlamp covers with leather straps
Dual Cooper fuel tanks
Rally seats by Restall (extremely rare)
Pair of Smith stopwatches
Halda Tripmaster
Halda Speedpilot
Works 120mph speedometer and 10k rpm tachometer
Works windscreen heater
Anti-mist rear window screen
Map reading light
Copilot vintage mirror
Redundant controls for copilot
2” LCB exhaust manifold and special Works exhaust system
45mm full roll cage
Switch extenders
This Cooper S was completely restored and prepared for the 2002 Monte Carlo Historique Rally. It has not been driven in any other events since then and has mostly been a showpiece. It was imported to the U.S. in 2009 when the current owners purchased it. The owners are avid vintage vehicle collectors specializing in historical racecars. The have been participating for decades at the Monterey Historics as well as other exclusive vintage race events around the country. Besides using this Mini around the pits, heir ultimate goal was to take the car back to Europe and continue racing in events there. Since this Mini had all the right papers and history, hey thought it would be perfect.
Their first goal was to make sure everything mechanically was in tiptop shape. So, hey hired one of the best – Huffaker Engineering, nc. of Sonoma, A. Joe Huffaker was a 6+ time SCCA National Champion in a vintage Mini Cooper and is known for building not only the fastest vintage racers, ut also some of the most reliable. He is not inexpensive, ut he is one of the best. In total, ver $15,000 was invested less than 100 miles ago rebuilding the drivetrain and other repairs.
Highlights of the mechanical/drivetrain restoration include:
Top and bottom (full) engine rebuild
1275 block bored +20

This Mini looks as good as it drives. The paint and body are in very good condition with minor signs of use. The trim and Plexiglas appear to be original or excellent older parts. The real Minilites wear Yokohama A008 tires with near full tread. The interior is in equally nice condition with what appears to be mostly original upholstery, arpet, nd headliner. All the gauges function properly and light up at night (including the Haldas and stopwatches). Even the interior dome light works. This is a functional vintage rally Mini Cooper that is turnkey and ready for any vintage event.
Of course, he best part is the way it drives. It feels extremely light and nimble. The combination of increased power and custom gearbox provides excellent power with nice low-end torque. The steering is extremely precise and shifting is very smooth and easy. The pedal position is perfect for easy heal/toe work. The brakes are not only responsive, ut have excellent pedal feel. In total, his set up inspires driving confidence.
Rarely do we see this high level prepared vintage FAI competition rally cars available in North America.
This Mini comes with the original wheels with vintage rally tires, riginal factory front grill cover (for cold weather driving), riginal trunk board, intage racing/importation documentation, nd recent drivetrain rebuild receipts.
