Post War 1952 BMW/ EMW 327/2 Cabriolet. Manufacturer Number (Serial Number) 87440. From Wikipedia: During the 1930s. nbsp;Eisenach was the centre of BMW’s automobile manufacturing. In 1945. Eisenach was occupied by United States forces. However. the wartime allies had already agreed that Thuringia would fall within the Soviet occupation zone. BMW's automobile factory in Eisenach was not fully destroyed. and assembly of the 327 resumed. Clear production figures are hard to obtain. but many of the 327s surviving with collectors into the twenty-first century were post-war products. After the war. it became clear that the Soviets would not return the Eisenach factory to BMW. BMW-branded automobiles produced between 1946 and 1951 were therefore being produced outside the control of BMW headquarters in Munich. This cause a protracted dispute concerning title to the BMW brand and other assets. but in 1952 it was determined that Eisenach-produced models such as the 327s should be badged as EMW (Eisenacher Motoren Werke) rather than as BMW (Bayerische Motoren Werke). EMW changed their badge from BMW's blue and white roundel to a red and white roundel. This fine automobile was purchased by my friend Andy York in the late 1970s. It was in an incomplete. disassembled condition at the time. missing only the original engine. It came with an appropriate fitting 6 cylinder overhead cam 1. 71 cc Bristol engine with three Solex carburetors from a Bristol 400 from the 1950's that mated to the original 4 speed manual transmission. and installed it. He had the car repainted in deep burgundy with black fenders. assembled it and has kept it in running condition ever since. It was featured in an article written by Mr. York with photos in "Car Collector" magazine. March 1987 issue. Andy also wrote the article about the car and provided the pictures. the article being titled "The Car That Came in From The Cold". referencing it's "behind the Iron Curtain" origin. one difference from the article. Andy first had this car titled as a 1949 year. because the VIN plate had no visible reference as to year (see pic). his surety bond application was based on the year stamped on the transmission. However. the title has since been corrected to 1952. that year coinciding with production number 87440. and being confirmed by Andreas Freudenberger restoration in Eggenfelden. Germany. About the engine: The Bristol 400 luxury car is the first automotive product of the British Bristol Aeroplane Company. AfterWorld War II. BAC decided to diversify and formed a car division. which would later be the Bristol Carscompany in its own right. BAC subsequently acquired a licence from Frazer Nash to build BMW models. Bristol chose to base its first model on the best features of two outstanding pre-war BMWs. namely the 328's engine. and the 326's frame. These were covered with a neat all-steel body inspired on BMW 327's. The Bristol 400 featured a slightly modified version of BMW's six-cylinder pushrod engine of 1. 71 cc (bore 66 mm. stroke 96 mm). This engine. considered advanced for its time due to its hemispherical combustion chambers and very short inlet and exhaust ports. developed 80 horsepower[1] at 4. 00 revs per minutes and could carry the 400 to a top speed of around 148 km/h (92 mph)[1] with acceleration to match. By contrast. he original 1. 71cc BMW engine in the 327 produced 55 horsepower. This is not a show car. what Andy referred to as a "it's not a trailer queen". it was a driver. Although unregistered for several years. he often drove it on the secluded paved roads near his home outside of Los Lunas. New Mexico. I am listing and selling the car for his wife Penny York. the clear title is now in her name and their daughter's. It is in start up. running condition but has some minor issues that could use some attention. It is not currently registered. title only. so I have not driven it but I know that the brake proportioning valve should be replaced although the brakes work. and the rear differential has a leak. Clutch and gears are functioning fine. engine idles smoothly and accelerates evenly. The paint is good for its age. no noticeable scratches or fading. but is not show quality. has some "crazing" in the hood area. and the car body seems to have not had any damage. has no dents. no flaking. The interior seems to be the original leather although the drivers seat has significant wear. The top was replaced at the time of the rebuild and is still in good condition. but the car is not weather proof. so it has been continuously garaged since the rebuild also. New Solex carburetors and Allstate tires were installed within the past few years. It has red and white EMW badged hubcaps but blue and white BMW badges on the steering wheel and radiator cover.
