Description for BMW 2002 1970

This BMW 1600 was sold to its first owner in Encino CA from Europa Motors, from there it moved to San Diego we believe in the 1990's where it spent a good amount of time in storage. The previous owner bought the car for his wife to drive but soon after she broke her arm and could not drive stick, so into storage the car went. During the 2nd owner's time the car was repainted in its original Rivera Blue and the motor was rebuilt. Very little else was done given its very original state.
About six years ago we bought the car and put her back into part time service. Mileage was unknown as the speedo suffered a common problem known to many in the '02 world, stripped plastic gear. A NOS speedo was found. Mileage on the original speedo stopped at "4,699", that might be 104,699.
Updates that we have done to the car include:
  • Ireland Engineering Stainless Steel exhaust
  • power coated wheels
  • Vredestein tires
  • Polyurethane bushings in the front suspension
  • Bilstien shocks all around
  • rebuilt front and rear brakes
  • new clutch
  • new Gubio on the drive shaft
  • custom fit Cocomats front and rear
  • newseatbeltsfront and rear- the original set will come with the car
  • Becker Europa am/fm stereo with amp and iPhone plug in
The interior is very original. There are a few splits in the driver's seat and on the back seat, there are cracks in the dash, and at least one in the headliner. Original carpet is in very good shape and mostly protected by theCocomats.
Exterior paint is faded and dull. Some may wish to repaint and restore it, but I have always cherished the patina and so have so many that give us a wave driving down the road. As shown in the pictures there is a small rust spot on the passenger side and another common spot where the spare tire sits. A replacement panel for the spare tire is include should you choose to fix that spot. Other than that there is just minor surface rust that is expected on a 1970 car from Southern California. The weather stripping is old and will need to be replaced at some point, but it is all there.
The drivetrain is very solid. The transmission shifts easily after it warms up. The carstill has its originalPorsche builtfour speed manual transmission. The engine is completely stock and runs smoothly. There is a slight hum from the rear axle that has never worsened in our ownership.
The car had A/C installed when new. It was non-functioning when we bought the car and I chose to remove the components from the engine bay. They will come with the car and could be rebuilt to restore this rare feature to the car.
To be honest I really don't want to sell this car, its been a pleasure to own and service. But its time to downsize thefleet. This is your opportunity to own a wonderful example of the car that saved BMW in the 1960's.
Good luck bidding!
