Description for Chevrolet Camaro 1989

1989 Rick-A-Shay 1LE Camaro 1 of 37 Magazine Car 1989 Rick-A-Shay 1LE Race Car Camaro 8k miles selling at $1 start and NO RESERVE! Uber rare factory race car with only 37 built. As raced and ready for a new home. Well. I got divorced. It sucked. but guess what. it's time to clean out some stuff and move on with life. I have 4 small kids. a whole new look at life and my interest in cars has changed. Now I'd like to consolidate to have fewer and higher end stuff. In 1989 there were 111 1LE Camaro’s built. Of that 111 the majority or 76 were specially built for the Players LTD series. That means this car is one of only 37 built in 1989 for sale in the US. In 1989 you were supposed to have a SCCA license to be able to purchase a 1LE. In 1990 anyone could order RPO code 1LE. Here’s the story I got directly from Rick Shay about this particular car. It’s been several years since I talked to him but to the new owner I will provide his contact info. Rick Shay of Rick A Shay racing ordered this particular 1LE and walked it down the assembly line to have the line workers weld additional places on the unibody (he ordered 2 cars at the same time). The cars were then shipped to a dealership in Atlanta before they drove them home to be converted into race prep. Chris Nebble drove it in the 1990 SCCA Pro series. The car was originally built for the Firestone Firehawk Endurance Championship but it was not good in the endurance championship but did really well in the Pro Series. This car came down the line w/ another 1LE. The other car was totaled shortly after starting the race season. Bart Kendell is the one that drove this car in the Firestone Firehawk series. Bart ran for a couple years and then sold to Bob Nevell. Rick said that he specifically watched them build this car and roll it down the line. Hardy Chevrolet in Atlanta Georgia is where it was delivered. It was a successful car and I purchased it because at the time I also had an IMSA Firehawk Supercar built by Rick-A-Shay as well. I am told this car won the 24 hours at Moss Port by 1-1/2 hours and Chris Nebble won the championship that year. This was originally a Rick-A-Shay racing car w/ number 69. And last but not least…per Rick this car is the last car GM gave new as a race car was this particular 1LE. I do not have proof or documentation of this so take it with a grain of salt. Rick did make mention that he has a ton of race footage and pictures of this car but I never was able to get up to see him. It's also been a magazine car. Car also has Firehawk SV tires in 16" size. If these tires were 17" 275's they would be worth almost $1k/tire as they were standard issue on the 1992 Firehawks. Current condition of the car: It’s a nice. as raced original. The paint is not perfect. The interior has been redone and I kept many of the original touches in the car. The emergency brake is not hooked up. The cat back race exhaust is still there. The headlight buckets are not painted black. they are white as it was raced. The dash pad is nice but there are small divots where the roll cage set next to the pad. Since I’ve had this car the check engine light has gone on and off over the years. The last time I ran a check it was the oxygen sensor. I replaced the sensor and the light went off for a few minutes and came back on. The car runs and drives just fine it’s just tuned to be a race car and the check engine light has acted this way since the day I purchased the car. I assume it's just the tune on the computer. In fact. when I bought the car there was black tape over the check engine light. The car runs and drives well. It could be a daily driver! It was a race car so it’s not an original paint car. (note. if you find an original paint race car then odds are it wasn’t very successful because it wasn’t driven to win) The car is nice but it’s been a race car that's not been restored. These are original miles and you can tell. The lower front valance is a slight shade of off white and you can see road rash in some of the stickers by the wheel wells. It's a 5 ft driver and not a show pony. You'd need to repaint. resticker and detail for a show car. The interior has been redone with NOS materials that I looked forever to find. The carpet is repo but the rest is NOS. This car is in essence how it was raced with the cage removed. I drove it around like this for many years. The boys loved it when I would take them to school. It’s now time for a new home. I’m 95% sure I have the log book for this particular car but I cannot find it at this exact moment as we moved the office several years back. I will continue to look and it will go to the new owner if/when I find it but at this moment this car does not have a log book offered. I will update auction if I find it. Clear title but the tag is out of date (this is only a problem if you are an Oklahoma buyer). I also have several other 1LE and Players Cars (at least one of every year from 1988-1992) along with a ton of parts and memorabilia. In case some of you don't know the history on some of these cars. Chevrolet Camaro's and Pontiac Trans Am's were campaigned in the Player's LTD/GM Motorsport series from 1986 through to 1992. Approximately 100 cars were built by GM each year for this race series and were raced by drivers from across Canada at most of the premier race tracks in Canada. The Canadian built players cars all had factory sealed engines and many times extra race goodies the regular street cars did not receive. The majority of races were televised on the Wide World of Sports and were often part of a larger race weekend such as the Molson Indy or the Grand Prix. PLEASE NOTE: This particular Rick-A-Shay race car is not a Players R7U car. however it is the US built version. In at least one race it raced in Canada alongside the Players Cars but it is not a R7U car (but I have one if you’d like). I’m not here to debate how valuable or collectable this car will be. you decide if this is a 8k mile COPO Camaro. a regular Berlinetta 6 cylinder or somewhere in between. All I know is that I’m ready to sell it ONLY because life dealt a new playing card. I’d personally take this racer over a show pony 8k mile car any day. It’s got character and there’s not another one like it plus you can drive and enjoy it! If you don't want to pay almost $100k for a 92 Firehawk then this is one of the next best things for a third gen collectible. BTW. the license tag does not come with the car! I also have the following 1LE and Players related cars: 1988 Camaro (Tony Morris #88. A4U. 1 of 71 cars built. Runs but needs restored. ) 1988 Trans Am Players Car (street car 1 of 20 built. Heads off motor but complete. ) 1989 Camaro R7U. Believed to be a race car. Has C&C T-Tops and is likely one of the Players pace cars. 1990 Camaro 1LE. One of 34 5 speeds built. Last year of Iroc and first year of air bag. This exact car sold for 60k at Barrett Jackson. Has 100k miles and I repainted the original paint when I got it several years ago. Blue/Gray interior and never raced. 1991 Camaro 1LE. 5 speed. Special ordered to run in the IMSA S/A series but the 1LE was outlawed as it arrived to the first class race. Great car with lots of documentation and built as a race car. 1992 Camaro 1LE Z03 Z28 - Purple Haze w/ silver heritage stripe 350 Car. Bought from original owner w/ 70k miles. Uber rare and one of only two purple heritage 1LE cars I have ever heard of (it was late in the year before you could even order purple. ) It’s also believed to be one of less than 30 Z03 Heritage 1LE’s. Also have a 1990 Formula 350. Black/Gray interior. Has a 92 Firehawk T-Ram intake and Ronal wheels. Nice shape. I do not have current pictures of the other cars and they have not ever been offered for sale. I’ve owned many of these cars for almost 10 years. I am just ready to consolidate a little and I need space in the garage. Car is located in Tulsa OK zip 74136. If your serious I'll be happy to answer questions to help make an informed decision.
