Description for Datsun PL521 1971
What you are bidding on is a 1971 Datsun PL521 pickup. It has 278,000 miles. It has been repainted in the original turquoise blue. It is on its second motorand runs great. It hasthe original4 speed manual transmission that has been rebuilt.Everything is originalwith the exception of the 4-wheel disc brake conversion, 15" wheels (to clear the disc brakes), the BMW steering wheel, modified rear bumper (which looks better and offers more protection), diamond plate on the tailgate, roll-on bedliner and the kayak rack. The truck runs, drives, and stops well.
I have owned the truck since 1995 when a familymemberpassed away. The truck had been sitting in the backyard for years. The truck was towed home and I decided to have the engine replaced with a used one that I lightly overhauled and installed. I also had the transmission rebuilt. After the motor and transmission were taken care of the rest was attended to. The truck was turned into a daily driver and driven by two of my sons while they were in college. During this time, although driven by my sons, the pickup was maintained by myself. The oil was changed on time, the brake shoes/pads were inspected and changed when needed as well as the brake fluid. All other maintenance items, like transmission fluid, coolant, etc. were also attended to at regular intervals. The "newer" motor has been great. It doesn't leak oil or overheat.
Over the years, although the brakes had been gone through very thoroughly time and time again, the stopping distance and jerking to the side when depressing the brake pedal became a concern. After some extensive research, I converted the rear brakes to disc. Since then, stopping distance and brake fade have been greatly reduced. Also, the jerking action when stopping on the brake pedal has nearly vanished. This gave me and my sons great peace of mind. It also makes changing the brakes easy!
About four years ago, I decided to have the truck repainted in its original turquoise blue. A friend painted it and it turned out beautifully. It was not painted in a shop but the paint still turned out really really well. Some very, very subtle pin striping was also done and looks great. After the paint job was completed I added the diamond plate on the tailgate and used a roll-on bedliner.
I also recently made a kayak rack for the truck out of aluminum tubing. I have special nuts and accessories that make it extremely difficult for someone to steal the rack which in turn makes it nice and easy to leave the kayaks on the truck locked to the rack. This way, you can go to lunch and not worry about leaving the Kayaks on the rack unattended. At this time, although I might change my mind, the custom rack is not included.
An enormous amount of time, energy and love went into this truck. The result is a pickup that is beautiful, functional and reliable. I really don't like the idea of selling it but space is at a premium at the house.
The only reason I am selling the truck is because all of my boys are now done with college and it is now an extra vehicle that I don't have room for.
