Looking like it is fresh from Mayberry, North Carolina and the set of “The Andy Griffith Show,” MotoeXotica Classic Cars is proud to present this 1949 Ford F2 ¾-Ton Tow Truck. This truck has been nicely restored.
Dressed in its white and black Mobilgas livery and riding on a 122-inch wheelbase, this truck definitely looks like a period extra from any TV show set just after World War II. The newer paint is in very good overall condition and its windows are in good shape, too, clear and intact. There is only a windshield wiper on the driver’s side. The truck’s lights are also clear and intact. The truck rolls on new 7.50-16LT tires, surrounding white steelies at all four corners. The body panels are straight and solid, including the Manly Three-Ton tow hook. Perched on the driver’s side running board is a vintage brass Miller pump-type, non-freezing fire extinguisher. The engine bay is tidy and very clean overall. The bumpers are in good order too.
The most noticeable change on the 1949 trucks was the deletion of the red pinstripes on the silver painted grille bars. Wheels were painted to match body color, rather than the previous black wheels.
Under the hood is a 239 CID Ford Flathead V-8 engine, buttoned to a heavy-duty three-speed manual transmission. Postwar, this engine became the V8-69 with compression 6.75:1. The 239 was redesigned in 1948 as the 8RT for Ford trucks and in 1949 as the 8BA for the cars. It had higher 6.8:1 compression, but performance was unchanged. The 1948 to 1953 engines have a revised cooling and ignition system.
Inside, the black vinyl bench seat is in overall good shape. The matching black carpet is in fair condition, while the headliner, driver’s only sun visor, white metal instrument panel, original three-spoke steering wheel, gear shifter and inner door panels are all in good shape. This truck is a radio-delete model and there is a flashlight lashed to the steering column. As a bit of whimsy, a period-correct lunch pail rests on the seat labeled “Gomer,” as in Gomer Pyle, Jim Nabors’ mechanic character in Andy Griffith.
This truck is currently located at our facility in St. Louis, Missouri. Current mileage on the odometer shows
0 miles. It is sold as is, where is, on a clean and clear, mileage exempt title. GET OUT AND TOW!!!
