Description for Ford Mustang 1987

1987 Ford Mustang 5.0 Fox-Body Hatchback (Maroon & Grey)

For sale is an intermediate level project car. About 85% of the work has already been done/replaced/upgraded. However, getting it running again will take some work, a few parts, and some intermediate level mechanical knowledge regarding fuel systems and exhaust systems. Will need a car hauler to move. Local pickup and weekend pickup only.

Vehicle History
I am the 2nd owner. I purchased this car around 1992 from a classmate in college with me. She was hard on the transmission regularly missing gear changes and grinding them. I ended up replacing the transmission at the dealer in about 1994. I drove it little during college and for the next several years. I got married, and, we started having babies in 1998 so we parked it in a garage until around 2010 when I decided to put it back on the road. I got it running, drove it occasionally on weekends for fun, and put on some bolt-on modifications. In 2012, we moved from Louisiana to Georgia, and it has been parked in a garage ever since. The vehicle is mainly stock and has about 150,000 miles on it. It was running poorly when I parked it, but it is NOT currently running.

Current Condition
Good overall – original doors and panels, 1 small dent in hood. Original paint – clear coat is flaking off quite a bit, though. Some of the gray paint on the plastic bumper has rubbed off showing the yellow primer/plastic underneath.
There is a bit of rust around the moon roof, which allows rain to drip inside so no outside storage is recommended until that’s fixed.
Seats are original and all are in good shape, except that a mouse has recently eaten a 2-3” whole in the driver’s seat.
The windshield has a 12” crack along the passenger side.
Wheels and tires are in good condition.

2010 Modifications Completed
•Replaced gas tank, fuel pump, sending unit. Replaced solenoid with a hotter one.
•Replaced brake master cylinder, wheel cylinders, and pads.
•Replaced door handles and actuators window actuator are/were working fine.
•Replaced radiator and hoses with racing style
•Replaced entire A/C system – all of it – it now uses R-134A.
•Installed a heat shield padding under carpet & replaced the carpet.
•Replaced the headliner.
•Wired it for sound using monster cables, installed a good stereo and replacement speakers, designed and build a subwoofer in a box angled to bounce off of back window, carpeted to match. It has 2 amplifiers. Upgraded alternator or handle this load. Installed fused breakers for main leads.
•Replaced headlight lenses and other exterior trim items.

2019 Modifications Completed
•Upsized fuel injectors from 17lb to 24lb (which requires no computer upgrade)
•Replaced fuel rail pressure regulator with an adjustable one.

Known Mechanical Work Needed
•Exhaust system needs replacing. When I last parked it, it was spitting out black flakes that looked like corn flakes. I suspect that the converters falling apart and this is why it was running very rough when I parked it for the last time. I bought a ceramic-coated header, but never installed it. The ceramic header is one diameter size larger than stock, which is a known bottleneck for the exhaust system. I was going to install an “H” or “X” exhaust system and mufflers.
•The steering has a slight catch in it when turning far left. I bought parts such as tie rod ends to rebuild it, but never installed them.
•I’d recommend dropping the fuel tank and draining it to see what condition it is in and then flush the fuel hosing and fuel rail from that end.

Spare Parts (go with the sale of the sale)

Exhaust ceramic-coated headers – newish looking. Will need to buy cross pipes and mufflers.
New steering parts such as tie rod ends.
Used speedometer (140mph)
New O2 sensors
A lot of other small miscellaneous stuff such as vacuum hoses, fittings, etc.

Maintenance books as shown

Thanks for looking!
