Description for Lincoln Mark III 1971
1971 Lincoln MK III
The 1969 Mark III was created when Lee Iacocca, Ford's then Vice-President, Car and Truck Group, at the time, directed Design Vice President, Gene Bordinat, to "put a Rolls-Royce grille on a Thunderbird".
The Mark III was intended to compete head-to-head with the top of the domestic personal luxury car market, Cadillac's heavily redesigned front wheel drive Eldorado. Separating it in style, the Mark III was squarer and more upright than the Thunderbird, highlighted by an unashamedly rip-off Rolls-Royce style grill flanked by hidden headlights, with an ersatz Mark II spare tire bulge on the rear.
For consignment a very straight, consistent gapped, resprayed to color match of original Lincoln. There is little to compare the ride of these very large and long cars that represented early 1970's excess. The high-end car market was the most profitable for Ford, and the MK III led the way.
Exterior
Light Gray Metallic covers the massive, but straight body panels, hood, and trunk. Some recent minimal body work (documented as to exactly what) was performed prior to the respray. Hidden headlights work well but open only when the car is running due to the vacuum needed to operate them. Chrome on the front grille is near perfect and is topped with a Lincoln star. Bumpers, brite work, and badging is all in very nice condition. A black vinyl top, framed in chromed drip moldings, glass framed in chrome, and a stainless molding at the rocker all appear in good condition. At the rear of the car is the metal bump in the trunk lid simulating a spare tire holder, which has the C O N I N T E N T A L badging in the upper portion in a semi-circle. A headlight sentinel is mounted to the upper driver's side fender.
Interior
Swinging open the doors reveals a high back dual bucket seat configuration which is covered in red leather. The seats have a wonderful pattern of slight wear as expensive leather that has been used but well cared for tends to have. Each seat has a center armrest, and on the other side a door panel with all the power controls one would ever wish for at your fingertips. These include power door locks, power windows, power mirrors, and a power adjustable seat. Scanning the beautiful stitched red vinyl dash with wood inlays, we see more conveniences in each frame. Climate control, cruise control, Am/FM Stereo, and interior lighting switches. Very nice red carpeting covers the floors and appears in good condition. Above is seen a near perfect headliner also in deep red. A shout out to the trunk area which appears showroom.
Drivetrain
The largest optioned power plant is seen in an original engine bay. The 460ci 4V V8 is attached to a C6 automatic transmission which shifts like a dream...very smoothly.
Undercarriage
Showing minor surface rust, overall a very sturdy environment. Rockers, lower door panels, floor pans, and suspension overall appears very sound and some parts were recently replaced with a recent well documented "once over" if you will.
This car has been brought up to a very sound body wise, and mechanically sound example of a large Lincoln. All the nagging little problems have been fixed, and all you need to do is turn the key and drive it away, in complete luxury. Road Trip!! All presented at a fair price to boot.
