This is a truly unique opportunity for Mercury enthusiasts, erformance car lovers, r anyone that collects iconic classic muscle cars. The Cyclone Spoilers are one of the best kept secrets in the collector car hobby. Mercury supposedly built 503 Cyclone Spoiler II models in 1969, o meet NASCAR production regulations and campaign the car on the racing circuit. There is information suggesting that the number is actually much less, nd they fooled NASCAR into believing they actually built the 503 to qualify to race the car. In addition, 69 Cyclone Spoilers were built for street use. There were 352 blue and white Dan Gurney examples, nd 617 red and white Cale Yarborough versions. These are extremely low production numbers, utting these cars in a very elite class.

However, here is one more version of the Spoiler that is even rarer than those mentioned above. There is very little information available, nd even the Talledega-Spoiler Registry has little background on these. These are some of the least known cars in the registry, nd in the hobby. We are referring to the Cyclone Spoiler Pre Production cars, lso known in the registry as the Color Code Cars, r Pre-Spoilers. Every year each manufacturer builds Pre Production units. Quite simply, hese are preliminary models or "test" vehicles that are built prior to the full production run begins. They may be similar, ut often not exactly like the final product. Many times, echanical, osmetic, nd appearance flaws can be corrected from examining the first units and upgrades and improvements made. The vehicle in this ad is one of these cars, ale Yarborough Edition. These cars were only discovered a few years ago, nd production numbers are unknown, lthough it is believed to be minuscule. 46,386 original miles. Three owner history. Mostly original with the exception of a partial restoration in the 90's. The undercarriage is as clean as the exterior of the car. Runs and drives just like it looks. Research indicates the pre production cars were built in very late 1968 as early 1969 models. These cars were the precursor to the final Spoiler and Spoiler II production models. They can be positively identified on the Marti Report by the either MT (wimbleton white and red), X(wimbleton white and blue), r "Special Paint Code". Keep in mind, nly a factory invoice or Marti Report can verify these cars. The Spoiler package was a factory option, ot a designated model. Other identifying characteristics on the Marti Report include engine, nterior, tc.

The Spoiler II models have an approximate build run of 1/1/69- 7/31/69. The Spoilers were also mainly produced from 1/1/69-7/31/69, owever there are documented units that were built all the way to the end of the 1969 model year.

The pre production Spoiler in this ad was scheduled for manufacture on 11/29/68, nd actual build date was 12/3/68. This follows directly in line with the other few documented examples. Marti Report verifies Special Paint Code- White/Red Roof, ody Side Tape, ord# 1619-A/2008-A. This is the positive identifier to a pre production Spoiler. Also displayed in the report is the correct 351, barrel Windsor engine, ed bench seat, tc.

The paragraphs above explain exactly what this extremely rare vehicle is. The following is a short history, or those unfamiliar, ollowed by the actual description of the car.

The Mercury Cyclone was manufactured from 1964-1971. It was, rom the start, romoted as a performance model. Through 1967, he Cyclone was offered as an option on the Comet platform. After that, he Cyclone name plate was a separate model.

By 1968, he NASCAR "Aero Wars" were in full swing. The race teams were looking for any advantage in the highly lucrative NASCAR series. In 1969, he Mercury Spoiler II was manufactured as a direct competitor to the Ford Talladega. They were mandated by NASCAR to build a minimum of 500 units, nd factory figures indicate they built 503, lthough history suggests they built less. The story is that when NASCAR came to inspect the cars, ercury mixed in several regular Spoilers, nd parked them in a way that the officials couldn't tell the difference. The Spoiler II is immediately recognized by the extended aero nose. They also decided, s a marketing ploy, o add the Cale Yarborough and Dan Gurney marquees to the vehicles. Cale Yarborough was one of the most successful NASCAR racers of the day, nd 285 red and white versions were supposedly built with his namesake. Although Dan Gurney only raced one NASCAR event per year, he Riverside Road Course, e was an extremely well known and accomplished racer. Therefore, n estimated 218 blue and white Dan Gurney units were built. The race cars were a great success, nd brought much needed attention to Mercury performance cars.

As to the regular production Spoilers, here were approximately 969 manufactured. 352 Dan Gurney Editions, nd 617 Cale Yarboroughs. They were a more street friendly version, nd they did not feature the elongated nose. They could also be ordered with more options than the stripped Spoiler II's.

This is a three owner car. All three owners lived in the same area and went to the same church. The car sat in the show room for a long time. Delivered to and sold at Piedmont Motors Inc., 20 W. Franklin St., astonia, C. The first owner finally purchased the car on 11/6/69. When the first owner picked up the car, t looked just as it does in the photos, ith the Spoiler and Cale Yarborough decals. Early in his possession, e was involved in a minor fender bender that damaged the hood and front fender. He put the car in storage with the intent of repairing the minor damage, ut the project was lost in time. He passed away, nd the second owner obtained the car. In the early 90's, e purchased a used OEM hood and front fender, nd repainted the car. At that time, e was able to obtain and replace the decals. He drove it until his health declined, hen sold to owner number three in 2010-2011.

Clean, traight North Carolina body. In the nineties, efinished in the original wimbleton white lower color, ed upper color, nd red side stripes. Cale Yarborough and Cyclone Spoiler decals. Even though the paint has been on the car for a long time, ue to the low mileage it is still in good shape. Nice driver quality, ith some chips and driving flaws. Still shows well, as glossy finish. Fit and gapping on all panels is very good. Mercury styled steel wheels with Winston Winner GT radial tires-P245/60R14. Rear spoiler. Driver side remote mirror. Hood pins. All chrome, tainless, nd bright work is in good condition. Bumpers, oor handles, ead and tail light trim, tc. all in nice shape. Original glass is also in good condition all around.

Per owner history, t appears the engine was upgraded by Holman-Moody. There is no paperwork or documentation, nly owner recollection. 351 Cu. In., 90 HP Windsor engine. Block is painted black, s Holman-Moody often finished their engines. Edelbrock Competition Series carburetor, 00 CFM, ounted atop an Edelbrock Performer 351W aluminum intake manifold. Cast iron cylinder heads. Hydraulic cam and valve train. Holman-Moody valve covers. Delco distributor. Accel Super Coil. Hedman Headers connected to Flowmaster dual exhaust. Power steering. Heavy duty manual drum brakes.

FMX Select Shift automatic transmission. Nine inch rear differential, .00:1 gear ratio.

The original dark red vinyl bench seat interior is almost entirely intact. Front bench seat has been recovered. Rear seat is original and in good condition. Original door panels have been redyed and are in good condition. Headliner is in good shape, ith a few small holes on the edge. Carpet is in good shape. Original dash shows some sun damage, nd has a crack. Full set of seat belts. Original steering wheel is in good condition. Jensen AM/FM/CD. This was originally a column shift automatic, nd a Hurst ratcheting shifter has been installed on the floor. Door handles, indow cranks, nd remaining interior trim is in good condition. Oil pressure, ater temperature, nd amp gauges. Seals and weatherstripping in good condition.

Please examine the photos of the undercarriage carefully. It is absolutely clean and solid as a rock. Frame, ub frame, ifferential, uspension are rust free and still display the black frame paint. The little bit of orange you see in a few photos is not condensation or discoloration, t is good old North Carolina red dirt!
