1970 Cyclone Spoiler for sale by Tanner's Classic Cars. I purchased this car from J. R. Smith at just Classic Toys in Orlando Florida. Smith described the car as all original. Original paint. original driveline. a beautiful car that was never messed with. As it turns out J. R. Smith is a liar and his company should be called just classic liars. I will never do business there again and would advise the same for anyone reading this. One might ask why din't you sue him? At the end of the day I'm muscle car enthusiast and I've always liked big Mercuries. especially Cyclone Spoilers. I didn't want the car going back to someone that doesn't know about cars or care about them. So I decided to put my money and time into making the car better than it was. Although the car is beautiful. it is not all original. I wanted an all original car. I thought I was getting my dream car but it was not the case. Lessons learned; Don't buy a car sight unseen. don't trust a used car salesmen. and buy with your head and not your heart. As the saying goes "they're only original once" and that was what I was looking for in this car. Although the car is not a perfect fit for me its still a good car and could be the right fit for someone else. What was delivered to me? A Cyclone Spoiler with 54. 00 miles on the odometer and judging by the condition of the body and interior. I believe that is true. But I also believe most of the 54. 00 miles was done 1/4 mile at a time. The engine was a rebuilt but it was a regular dime a dozen 429. Nothing cobra jet about it. The transmission appears original or at least correct for the car. The third member was a regular 9 inch with 3. 89 gears and a spool. The interior appears all original and is in excellent condition. There is an aftermarket stereo/cassette in place of the original am radio. The in dash tach works but the other gauges are disconnected. A gauge pod was added below the dash which does work. The body is overall solid. The passenger rear quarter had a patch put in from a donor car so the factory spot welds are retained along the bottom of the trunk drop off. The drivers side has a smaller patch and also retains the factory spot welds along the trunk drop off. The car was repainted with base coat/clear coat. The door jams are very nice. The transmission tunnel was cut out with a torch around the shifter linkage. I assume during its racing days. A patch was put in from a donor car. It was not a great job but its OK. It can only be seen when the car is on a lift. It appears after its racing days it was either broke or just parted out of all the SCJ goodies. Someone came along and restored the car using non-original driveline parts. I believe they also added air conditioning at that time. AC is not listed on the Marti report. Additionally. the compressor is aftermarket made to look original. Also. the air blows at the floor and the defrosters indicating when the AC dash was installed they did not alter the original duct work. Although the center vents are present. they do not blow any air. A lot of the suspension parts were replaced and painted at that time. I took the 3. 89 third member out and replaced it with a N case 3. 00 gear ratio. The 31 spline axels where there as well as the staggered rear shocks. I'm unable to locate a 3. 91 ring and pinion at this time. However the 3. 00 is much more street friendly than the 3. 89 gears. For cruising purposes I would stay with the 3. 00. I pulled the 429 and replaced it with a rebuilt 1970 429 cobra jet I pulled from a 1970 Cyclone GT. The motor was rebuilt by the previous owner and never fired. It has the original CJ valve covers. oil pan. exhaust manifolds. intake manifold. The transmission must have been rebuilt because it looked new on the inside. And it works like new. The clutch and pressure plate were also like new. I've tried very hard to make the car as original as possible with limited funds. This is not a trailer queen. restored car. It is a very nice looking and driving car. I was also able to get 5 original wheels and repair the hideaway headlights. The ram air assembly is all original Ford parts. Whats not original? The motor is a 429 Cobra Jet instead of a SCJ. The am radio was replaced with an AM/FM cassette. A small gauge cluster was added under the dash. the 3. 91 trac lok is now a 3. 00 open. the oil cooler is gone assuming it had one. and air conditioning was added. The hood is a 1971 Cyclone hood. What was the car originally? The car is documented with the deluxe Marti report. One on 1. 31 Spoilers made in 1970. One of 341 ordered with a 429 SCJ engine and the drag pack option. The car was ordered with the following options: 4 speed close ratio transmission. 429 SCJ/drag pack. 3. 91 traction-lok axle. ram air. G-70 X 14 belted tires with raised white letters. console. power front disc brakes. power steering. am radio. hideaway headlamps. rear sear speakers. tinted glass complete. This is a very nice driver quality car. These cars are not easy to find in this condition. All the chrome and stainless is there and in very good condition. The interior is very nice. The dash is perfect. The parts issues that detract from 100% originality are: the engine is a 429 cobra jet instead of a SCJ. The 3. 91 trac lok has been removed. The third member is still a 9 inch. 31 spline. N case. The oil cooler has been removed. assuming it had one. And the radio has been replaced with an AM/FM cassette. Additionally it appears AC has been added to the car because the car has AC but it is not listed on the Marti report. That is an honest description of the car as it sits right now. I don't have documentation of the car's history. If your OK with less than 100% originality. you will love this car. If you desire 100% originality than this car may not be for you. As always. I encourage you or your representative to inspect the car prior to purchasing it. I have over $40. 00. 00 in this car. I know. thats my problem! My loss is your gain. NADA values a 1970 Cyclone Spoiler with a 429 CJ. ram air. 4 speed at average retail of $30. 55 to $34. 00 as high as $56. 00 adding in all the options. I think $32. 00. 00 is a realistic price for this car. I will consider interesting Ford trades. especially those on my cars wanted list. Please keep in mind I don't have to sell this car. however I would like to move on to the next project and put this ordeal behind me. Thanks.
