Description for Mercury Comet 1964
This hard to find Mercury started its second life 2 years ago. Engine was completely rebuilt, with only 7k miles driven. (You can tell from the new paint on the block.) I drove it around the neighborhood. It runs like a top. Engine has good oil pressure. It does not run hot or leak a drop of oil. It starts, idles, accelerates, steers and brakes as it should, ..... effortlessly. Fordomatic transmission shifts when it's supposed to. Steering is straight and tight. Brakes are solid. There is a rattle coming from right front with bumps, sounds like a bad shock. Performance is snapping for what was considered a compact car at the time. The 200 six is long stroke and noted for its low-end torque. It was the work horse for the early Ford trucks, helping to make the F-150 a best seller. Now this compact car has become more a full size vehicle capable of sitting 6 comfortably. Many parts are shared with the Falcon, making replacement parts readily available and inexpensive. Mercury was placed in the mid-price market between Lincoln and Ford to compete with GM's Buick and Chrysler's Dodge. It has new seat covers and carpets. New dash.Door panels were fabricated in stainless by an artist in the theme of a 50's Diner. Just add period music on your cruise! Owner became ill and never finished the headliner. Now he just wants to recover some of his expenses. NADA Average value is $7500.
Lights work, as do windows and doors. Original spare and bumper jack are in the trunk along with some parts, on a factory mat. No accident or body damage. Rust is next to none, with the trunk lid showing surface crack in the picture, (next to "Comet.") Registrationwas current when renovation began in 2014. This car is already 95% finished. It has had a good life with many more good miles left. Most of all, it's a fun car to drive with die-hard reliability and economy of a six. You feel the road in your hands! It's American auto manufacturing at its historic best, advanced after the War, and before quality problems of the 70's.
