Model Review (MG-TD.com):
MG TD
The first model set the stage for what the TD was. Because of the short amount of time from the inception of the TD to the delivery of the first cars, not everything was quite as the MG Car Company would have liked it. In fact they were still making TCs on the production line when the first TDs were being produced. In addition, other cars such as the MG Y-type saloon and the Riley RMA and RMB were also being made on the same assembly line at the time. This says something for the flexibility of the Abingdon workforce and of the factory.
Apart from revised mountings, the engine for the new MG TD was the same 1250cc XPAG unit fitted to the previous model, the MG TC.
There were many subtle changes to the TD, but most were unnoticeable to the untrained eye. One exception was the change from solid steel wheels to ventilated steel wheels. This change was essential because there were complaints that the brakes on the early cars were fading due to inadequate cooling. Another change was to stiffen the chassis by adding an internal steel hoop under the dashboard. This helped to prevent `scuttle shake', although the later chassis still seems to flex quite a bit when pressed into corners.
In July 1951 the 1250cc XPAG engine received a new block, a new sump, a new bell-housing and a new flywheel in order to accommodate a larger clutch. The engine number prefix was changed to TD2, and MG TDs fitted with this engine have subsequently become known as TD2 models, although contemporary marketing materials did not use this designation. The changeover occurred at engine number XPAG/TD2/9408. (The TD2 should not be confused with the MG TD Mark II). (MG-TD.com)
An example tested by The Motor magazine in 1952 had a top speed of 77 mph (124 km/h) and could accelerate from 0–60 mph (97 km/h) in 18.2 seconds. A fuel consumption of 26.7 miles per imperial gallon (10.6 L/100 km; 22.2 mpg-US) was recorded.(Wikipedia)

This 1952 MG Midget TD was sold new at Briston Motors in Fresno, California. The first owner gave it to his daughter who drove it through high school and college in the late sixties. She married and moved to Seattle with the car (shipped) with only 30,000 miles, stored it in a heated garage in Seattle for ten years, then sold it to the second owner. The second owner intended to fully restore the car, but never got around to completing it. He kept the car in heated storage, also in the Seattle area, for another ten years. The second owner confirmed he bought the car with 30,000 miles and that it was completely rust free. Work and family obligations kept him from finishing the restoration. He subsequently sold it in 1991 to a couple who completed a substantial restoration on this TD starting in 1994 in Seattle. They later moved to Fanny Bay, British Columbia and imported the MG TD to Canada. It has always been stored indoors and has been driven just 3,164 miles since the restoration in 1994. In 2008/2009 a smaller restoration was undertaken to make the MG TD as correct and original as possible.
1994 restoration work included:
* Disassembled with complete bodywork and paint by Schultz Auto Rebuild in Lynwood, WA* Complete engine rebuilt by Jim Green’s Performance Centre in Seattle; including new crankshaft* Transmission rebuild by Performance Motors in Seattle* Brakes and other components renewed as required* New interior and convertible top
Since 2008 to totally complete the restoration:
* Replace horn/dip switch, install period driving lamp and fog lamp, steering wheel centre piece, re-chrome headlight bodies and brackets, new half tonneau from Octagon Motors, new period correct seat belts, five new BF Goodrich radial tires, new battery, correct luggage rack.
* Lots of “sorting” including correct fasteners, better alignment of brake lines and gas line, restoration of dash panel including removal of incorrect non-period extra switches, installation of turn signals including a NOS Lucas turn signal switch from 1952.
* Additional mechanical and tune-up work to complete the restoration by Mike “The Wizard” Owen - replace gas tank sender, new clutch, new timing chain and all work required to ensure accuracy and authenticity.
Since then, we ran this TD through a local mechanic’s shop to adjust idle and perform a safetly inspection. It is running like a top and is in excellent well restored condition.
It comes complete with a full tool kit, original TD manual, workshop manual, history and ownership records. It also comes with a binder of documentation and receipts for the restoration work. If you’d like to see the file, please let us know and we will scan it and email to you.
