1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme/442 Paint Code 26 Viking Blue Convertible being sold with "No Reserve"
I'm sure all the real Olds guys out there know how hard it is to find a True Viking Blue Cutlass/442 convertible. I purchased this 1972 original paint code 26 Viking Blue Cutlass Supreme/442 convertible from an extremely nice elderly gentleman in an upscale suburb close to Chicago. The gentleman appeared to be in his late 80's and when I asked him his reason for selling, e looked at me with a look that we both understood, nd replied, Well, can't take it with me. It's time that someone else enjoy this car." His large garage also boasted a beautiful and unique 1st year Olds Tornado sitting next to this drop top. The clean and clear title is in the gentleman's name that I made the purchase from. The plates had just expired on the car, nd he explained to me that after purchasing the car in 2002, he just liked to take weekend cruises for enjoyment, nd had always been an Olds fan.
The odometer on this car shows slightly over 50,000 miles but I have no way of telling if it is original mileage. The engine does appear to be original to me, made an attempt to retrieve the numbers from the motor butit's difficult to makeout more than a digit or two from the pad below the bracket. This 350 Rocket Olds, riginal or not, ires right up, ounds strong, nd runs extremely well.The motor hasjust been treated to all newplugs, ires,distributor cap and rotor.The car had some previous exhaust leaks and sounded stock, o I had a new complete dual exhaust system installed at a local shop. They added a nice pair of 40 series flowmasters which have a distinct rumble and complement the beautiful body lines with that perfect muscle car sound.
This convertiblehas recently been sprayed with 3 fresh coats of Viking blue topped with clear coat, nd buffed to bring out a brilliant gloss.It justlooks spectacularwith this rare color combination Viking Blue, hite interior, nd a white convertible top. A couple weeks ago while I was outside washing the 442,a passer-by stopped and asked me if I would mind if he took some pictures of the car! Of course I didn't mind, hat's what the car is there for, o be enjoyed by all.
According to the OldsFaqs website only 1,025 of the Cutlass Supreme/442 convertible models were made with an automatic transmission in 1972. They said whether this model is a real 442 or a converted Cutlass Supreme it is still considered to be like a real 442 if it is converted properly. If it were a real W-30 it would have an X in the vehicle identification number. The fender wells were only red on the very first 10 1972 W-30's that rolled off the assembly line in December of 1971. I'll give a little background on the 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, utlass S, nd 442 models. Prior to the 1972 model year the vehicle identification numbers in all 442's started out with 344. That was the way to determine whether that specific car was ordered from the dealership as a true 442. This is easily verified by the OldsFaqs website that anyone can look up online. The 442 could be ordered as a separate model for the last time in 1971. Oldsmobile decided to make the 442 an ordered option starting in 1972. The OldsFaqs website made the statement that there is no such thing as a fake 442 in 1972. All 1972 442 convertible models started life as a Cutlass Supreme, ince the 442 was an ordered option. Whether the car was factory ordered as a 442, r dealer installed, r a private owner installed the 442 options, hey are all considered Cutlass Supreme or Cutlass S bodies. This is why all 1972 442 convertibles have Cutlass Supreme on the glove box door, nd all 442 hardtops have just plain Cutlass on the glove box door.
The carpet appears to be original and still shows nicely, nd will probably be good for many years to come. The carpeting on the door panels was worn and has been professionally replaced with a high quality original style from OPGI, nd the beautiful white seats were professionally reupholstered in the original pattern, nd should provide years of comfortable riding to the new owner(s).
I was planning to finish this car off with the red fender wells, he cut-out rear bumper with trumpeted exhaust, nd some other things, ut we are having another child in the next few months. Instead I have decided to sell one of my toys to help with medical expenses and such. I'm a huge 442 fan and I've owned a few of them over the years. I know how enjoyable and rewarding it is to cruise around on a nice day with the top downin one of these cars. Aside from personal enjoyment, hese cars are also very rare and getting harder to come by in nice driver condition such as this one, t an affordable price. These early 70's muscle cars have incredible investment potential, nd have been referred to as rolling bank accounts. Remember, hen the top goes down, he price goes up! Any dollars spent in the maintenance, pgrades, r further improvement to this car are only going to add value to it down the road.
Currently this car, n my opinion, s in very nice driver quality condition.Somewhereduring the lifeof this beauty, omeone was even kind enough to replaceboth of the rear quarter panels with new ones. The car does have some flaws, ut "shows"nicely and could easily be taken to any car event with pride. In fact I just had it at a local event here in town this last weekend, nd the car was getting a lot of looks. I feel that this car was sitting right in the middle of the pack somewhere with regard to show presentation. The car is not perfect however, nd I don't want to sugar coat anything in this auction. The convertible top, hich I doubt is original, s in pretty decent shape, nd is still relatively soft. However, here is a very small cut/blemish in one spot which had been repaired from the inside, ometime in the past by a previous owner. I have never noticed it to leak anything from this repair. Also, n the back right corner of the glass window, he adhesive which holds the glass to the vinyl has started to become brittle, nd let go. That area might want to be addressed by the new owner. The chrome on the bumpers and wheels also shows very nice, ut is not new. The raised white letter Dayton Daytona SR tires that the car is riding on are ok, nd may last a couple more seasons, ut if the new owner is going to be going on a fair amount of road trips, e/she may want to replace the tires soon, s they are showing some wear.
This car is a pleasure to drive and I would feel confident driving it anywhere. The interior also shows very well, specially with the freshly upholstered seats, nd the new Fisher door sill plates, ut there are a couple of areas which I should mention. The factory power top switch has been bypassed by a previous owner and is currently being operated by a aftermarket toggle switch located just under the left side of the dash. I do not know why a previous owner would have bypassed the original, aybe it doesn't work.... maybe it does? I've never felt the need to dig into it further. Also, he horns: they do work because I tested them, ut somewhere in the steering wheel they were never hooked up. Again, omething that didn't bother me so I left it alone. All you hardcore olds guys are probably scoffing at the radio attached to the lower dash. Well, e too, but there is something nice about having a modern listening radio. I cannot take credit for installing the Aiwa Cassette deck, t was likely installed years ago (probably when people still listened to cassette tapes) but it does sound nice and there are at least 4 speakers in the car providing you with some nice tunes to Jam to as you cruise! There is a factory style AM radio in the original, ncut hole. I do not know if this radio AM radio functions, s I am happy with the aftermarket one installed. I decided to leave the decision regarding removal of the aftermarket radio to the next owner.
Depending on where you live in our great country, here's still some top-down cruising time left this season so don't miss out on your chance to own this collectible, ffordable, onvertible Cutlass. The options include power steering, ower brakes, ower convertible top, ual sport mirrors, our Super Stock I sport wheels (with new chrome lug nuts and center caps), 42 sport steering wheel.
I saw no signs of this car ever being involved in an accident. The suspension looks to be in very good condition. This Olds really sits up awesome with the proud stance of a 442. The original trunk floor had some repair, ut was then coated with black and aqua spatter spray to make it appear factory correct. Should you get a flat, he convertible trunk trunk does carry a full size Super Stock I spare wheel in black and chrome, ith an original rocket logo center cap, o she'll be up and looking proper in no time. The factory set of four 14" inch Super Stock I Chrome wheels with black inners, ave been updated with a fresh coat of low gloss blac, hrome lug nuts on all four corners as well asfour NEW chrome center caps.
Most of the chrome/stainless is very presentable on this car, r in drivers quality condition. The exterior door handles were also replace with new chrome plated ones. What you see is exactly what you get! These complete older classics that have survived for over 40 years are becoming harder and harder to find. Especially in Viking Blue!!

Those vehicles can reach much higher prices. $36,520 in average condition, hich they consider in good overall condition that could be an older restoration or a well maintained original vehicle that is completely operable. The exterior paint, rim, nd mechanics are presentable and serviceable inside and out. They say an average condition car is considered a 20-Footer! As shown in the pictures I would consider this Olds Convertible currently valued in between the average and high condition, nd could be rated much higher with some hard work. They have the lowest condition value at $24,750 being considered a deteriorated restoration or a very poor restoration, ut mostly usable "As-Is!" The lowest value does not represent a parts car, ut would be considered as the price for a car needing a complete restoration. This Oldsmobile is an investment that I believe will continue to rise as these cars have been consistently proven to escalate in value.
