BODYWORK/TRIM
There was certainly no shortage of great color options for the legendary Chevelle, ut it's hard to argue the effect Cranberry Red has on the car's sturdy lines. Fully stripped, olted to NOS fenders and fitted with a pair of fresh quarters, his glossy Chevy looks great finished with black Super Sport stripes and thoroughly buffed clear. Shut lines look straight all around, ith rockers, oors and lids that work well together. And the end result is one high caliber classic that netted 996 out of 1,000 points on its way to achieving a Platinum Award at the 38th Annual International Eckler's Chevy Classics Show.
Aesthetically, any enthusiasts believe the '70 Chevelle introduced a host of excellent refinements that transformed the 'good' design of the '69 Chevelle into something 'great'. At the front of this retro road rocket, "CHEVELLE" branded grille hangs a fresh and prominent "SS" emblem between stainless-seated T3s, lear marker lamps and a thick chrome bumper. Above that bumper, correct cowl induction hood anchors traditional lanyards and rebuilt Hide-A-Way wipers at the base of like-new glass that's flanked by straight stainless frames. Beneath those frames, old "SS454" badges combine with dent-free fender trim, raditional door handles and a flashy mirror to add visual detail to the car's vivid profile. And at the back of that profile, second chrome bumper hangs a black Super Sport inlay between clear brake lamps, fresh "Chevelle by CHEVROLET" emblem and polished exhaust tips.
ENGINE
Although the second generation Super Sport's ferocious Turbo Fire V8 was conservatively rated at 450 horsepower, t actually punched the dyno somewhere north of 500. Pull this classic's pins and you'll find a correct cowl induction system that's cleanly integrated into a completely finished, atin Black frame. At the center of that frame, decaled single-snorkel air cleaner forces oxygen into a big Holley carburetor and correct aluminum intake. At the back of that intake, traditional points distributor sequences fire through high quality Packard TV R Suppression cables. Below those cables, orrect exhaust manifolds split the difference between old school emissions hardware and a Crane hydraulic, lat-tappet cam. And at the front of that cam, M hoses channel water past a correct fan and rebuilt alternator with the help of a beefy radiator and familiar tower clamps. During the car's extensive restoration, he big Chevy was completely overhauled and decked in glossy orange paint. And, rom its Delco-topped battery and mirrored valve covers all the way to its Delco brake booster and stainless fluid lines, he monster mill looks much nicer than anything that left GM's factories.
DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION
Naturally, his A-Body's road-ready chassis has been restored to the same high standards as its slick profile and clean engine compartment. A nice coat of Satin Black paint provides a great foundation for a slew of tags, aint marks and factory-accurate details. Behind the stout big block, n original M22 'Rock Crusher' hangs a correct 3925661 casting number between a Muncie (P) M22 © assembled on May (E) 24th (24), 970 (0) build stamp and matching partial VIN. That tough gear grinder spins power to a correct "CRW" stamped 12-bolt, hich spins a posi-traction differential around meaty, .10 gears. Holding that killer drivetrain off the ground is a familiar F41 Special Performance Suspension, hich is equipped with factory power steering, eavy-duty sway bars, oxed control arms, nd stiffer springs and shocks. The car's rebuilt power front disc and rear drum brakes are present, ccounted for and function exceptionally well. The aforementioned exhaust manifolds dump spent gases into true-dual pipes that breathe through factory replacement mufflers and rear-mounted resonators. Power meets the pavement via stylish Super Sport wheels and F70-14 Goodyear Polyglas tires. And, n keeping with its raucous 454, uch attention has been paid to making sure everything under this Chevelle is virtually spotless.
INTERIOR
Decked in correct Black vinyl, his coupe's fully restored interior features a host of new components. Its slick front bucket and rear bench seats, hich feature embossed weave patterns that were designed to keep passengers' backs cool, how hardly any signs of wear. In front of those seats, correct Super Sport dash hangs deluxe telemetry above a correct Delco pushbutton radio. Below that dash, resh black carpet, hich is protected by thick plastic floor mats, enters a chrome Muncie shifter inside an attractive, tainless-trimmed console. At the sides of that carpet, lean door panels proudly display spotless "SS" emblems. In front of the driver, thin Super Sport steering wheel keeps everybody pointed in the right direction. And behind the passengers, fully restored trunk centers a full-size spare tire between a new mat and correct decklid decals.
