Description for Other Makes 1940
1940 Brockway 83-10 Dump Truck
For 65 years Cortland, New York was the home of Brockway, one of the 20th Century's best-known manufacturers of heavy-duty class 3, 4 and 5 motor trucks. If you grew up in New York State, chances are your town or municipality owned a number of Brockways, which were the chassis of choice for snow removal and road maintenance work. Many town's fleets were exclusively Brockway, and the brand continues to enjoy a rabid fan base a good 40 years after the last Brockway rolled out of its Central Ave. factory.
For consignment, a hydraulically operated dump bed truck right out of 1940. Used by the original owner as a coal hauling truck for the St. Clair, PA school district then finally sold to our consignor and nicely restored in 1984. Since the restoration the truck has been used as an advertising piece and has been maintained in original format with the exception of the working aluminum dump bed. Gracing the South wing of our Hallowed Halls, we proudly offer for consignment, the 1940 version of the Brockway 83-10 dump truck.
Exterior
WIth its high up cab fronted by a massive radiator and chromed grille surround, cowled and louvered hood it is all go with beautiful blue paint. Let's not forget the Brockway emblem sitting top dead center of the chrome grille corral and looking just dandy. Exterior steel panels are good, and slight misalignment of gaps and bodyline are noted on the doors. Large blue painted fenders have the turn signals top center and nestled next to the radiator atop black stalks are chrome bullet bezel headlights. Near flawless curving chrome makes up the front bumper and has the perfect Art Deco flair for this worker bee. The Hewey aluminum dump bed, which operates hydraulically, is topped with blue sideboards and a top hinged swingable tailgate complete with slide up trap door. The bed floor appears nearly new and has been used sparingly if at all. Dual blue painted steel wheels are on back and single blue steel wheels are up front, all painted and restored nicely. All are wrapped in 6.50-20 blackwall rubber which are nearly new.
Interior
Utilitarian and all functional interior with a lightly textured black vinyl bench seat, rubber flooring and all metal lined interior. Of note is the interesting curvature of the lower seat cushion which allows room for shifter actuation along with PTO engagement. The dash has centrally located gauges and knobs and we note the lack of a heater, so you'd better bundle up for those cold climate deliveries. A large original steering wheel fronts the dash. Diamond plate door sills are on to highlight the rubber floor mats.
Drivetrain
A large 244ci Continental gas engine topped with a single 2-barrel carburetor and a 4-speed transmission on back. A heavy-duty rear axle is on to handle those heavy payloads.
Undercarriage
As this truck will not go on our lift, a visual inspection shows a fully restored, mechanically operating truck with a hydraulically operated dump bed. Frame is very solid, and all the undercarriage is painted black.
Drive-Ability
A steep climb in and some cranking but the gasser came to life. We had to allow a warm up time for the engine and then a few more minutes for me to figure out how to engage reverse, (hint: flip the lever on the shifter handle up then move the shifter right and down), finally we were out to the well-hidden and never duplicated test track where it shifted nicely and drove like a truck!
A neat restoration of an iconic fleet manufacturer truck. Bathed in blue, it's all working, and with the aluminum dump bed will last another 60 years! I see a business opportunity for someone.
