Description for Pontiac GTO 1968
Hi, bought this car in January of 2011. It was bought by a good friend mine off of Ebay,Probably about 1 year prior to me buying it.The car was Canary Yellow when I bought it. It should have been Aleutian Blue originally. We both thought this was a decent body that would make a easyRestorationProject. Boy were we wrong!! The whole car had some very well hidden body work. I had a good friend of mine who has done body work for year, completely fooled. I know this is much more common a problem then we would like to face.So I will try todescribewhat i had done at a very Well respected Body Shop in town. This took a little over 3 years to complete, nd unbelievable amount of money and Patients!
First Ill start with the drive train, he motor is number correct to the car,as well as the transmission and Rear end. There are a couple of things I know are notcorrecton the motor.TheCarburetoris a Elderbrock(polished)replacement for the Quadrojet. The distributor is a Malloryelectronic. I put on new Ram Air exhaustmanifolds, ear correct just for performance gains. Everything else I believe it right. I do have a period correct Quadrojet that I have but have not put on yet- that will go with the car.I just installed a new Clutch Pressure plate, and Throw out bearing last week. The bearing was growling so I replaced it all while I was there.
The interior was originallyBlack- I changed it to the Year correct Pearl White. I thought it looked so much betteragainstthe Blue exterior. Every piece of the interior is brand new, oam and seat cover,Console,Door panels, arm rests, emblem, handles - door and windows,The carpet and padding. Iwasn'treal happy with the way the carpet fit. It was for a 4 speed ca, but therestorationtook so long it was kinda hard to complain to themanufacturer. The carhadafter market gauges that work fine, he tach does not work, m assuming because of the mallory Distributor. I did install a new printed circuit for theinstrumentcluster while it was removed. The fuel gauge did work when it took it to body shop but dosn't work now.I know it has to be a wire not hooked up,when they removed it for body work.
Here is a list of what I can remember what I had replacedconcerningsheet metal. This was all purchased at either -OPGI- The Parts Place-Ames,or other Pontiac retailers.1)Hood2)Both Doors3) Both Quarters .4) The panel that is in between the trunk and top.5) The entire Truck pan6)The panel the truck lid mounts to and also goes to trunk pan7) Inner and outer wheel wells REAR8) Fire wal, ute, upper- wiper tray area, llwindshieldpillars9) Floor pans Both sides front to Rear10) Fenders, oth sides11) Inner wheel wells FRONT12)Inner and outer lower rockers13) hoodhinges, both sides14) The outer door handles, indshield chrome, rocker moldings,15 GTO emblems for the fenders and Trunk, s well as the interior door panels16) Front turn signal assemblies on Valance panel,New chrome on Valance panel.17) wheel well chrome x418) Rear spoiler,Judge style but I really liked theappearance19)Rear coil springs
All of the cars parts were painted off the Car,jams and fire wall weresprayed. Then Assembled and resprayed and cleared. Sandedre-cleared-Buffed .The car is now the original ALEUTIAN Blue its was supposed to be.I have looked at Hundredsofthese GTO's since I have owned this on, and I believe this is one of the more rare colors that was put on them.I'm not a restoration garage-Just a guy who bought a car that turned into a UNBELIEVABLE project. Ididn'twant to cut corners, r put bondo all over this car. I could have useda lotof the old parts but decided to use new parts in all my purchase, he finished Car isABSOLUTELYBEAUTIFUL.
I am only selling this car due to divorce** I don't have t, and it really sucks to know that when I do sell i, I will Probably never have anything this nice again. But I could use the money for other things. I also have a 1966 Lemans/GTO convertible. If this 68 sells I will keep the 66,If not -I will sell my 1966.
Imight be interested in a partial trade for a 70-72-GS/ or 442 or 68-72 nova, don't want to take on any projects,so nice cars only. Thanks
