Description for Pontiac Firebird 1975
Vehicle DetailsBefore I get started, all statements, are of course, true to the best of my recollection, knowledge, or abilities, etc, and "the big deal", IMO, on this car, is the very rust free condition (as rust free as possible, for a car with either 144k miles, or 244k miles)... Firebirds, of these years just "dissolved", from road salt... Very quickly... Way back when...
It's been in Long Beach, California, 3 miles from the ocean, since 1977, and in the greater LA area, before that... Tho now it's staying in the Palm Springs area...
This is a 1975 standard Firebird with a 1971 455 v-8 (was a 280 horse 2v 455, originally), stock cam, #64 1970 GTO heads, Quadrajet #7042272 (1972 Pontiac 455 auto), 700R4 transmission, plate transmission cooler, large aluminum radiator, 12 bolt 3.07 open differential...
It also has a complete, but disconnected, propane delivery system still installed on the car... It also has other, systems, still on the car, but all non operational, like an old alarm, from the late 1970's, an old stereo, & speakers under the pkg tray area,, wires going here, and there, etc...
I just had a (used) rebuilt Quadrajet carb installed, all new shocks, ( rear are Monroe "load bearing shocks",,, fronts are Monromatic plus shocks,) and new motor mounts... The car, sits up a bit, in the rear, and the front is at, or above, stock level, from my viewing the car, but i have no data, to back that up...
IMO ... the car now needs the 700R4 "TV cable", re-adjusted, and I believe, some more carb, tuning to this specific application, plus I believe battery cables, need to be replaced, along with the very incorrect side battery negative cable attachment bolt, which sometimes (looses some better connection ?), and, causes(?) a hot, "non start", condition ...
Car has Hankook Kinergy ST, 225-70-15 100T, blackwall tires and are date coded as follows LF-4120, LR-4420, RR-4020, RF-4120, (IE all tires were made in late 2020), and they hold air, very well... The gas tank is 21 gallons...
This FB was purchased by my wife's father, in 1977, and the car was then used as a daily driver 1977-1999,,, and then more sparingly until 2015, tho it has towing connection bars, under the front bumper, and a quick disconnect driveshaft to be able to be towed behind a motor home, which it was, occasionally, towed, 2001-200, ...
We inherited it, early 2020... Originally this car was a 350-4V, 350 turbo hydromatic auto, 10 bolt, Silver, black interior... The rebuilt 1971 455 was purchased in February 1986 (Bonded Motors, in Los Angeles, & I have that receipt), by my wife's father, and it came with #64 1970 GTO heads, and it was then placed, into another FB car, 1987-1990, tho removed in 1990, but then sat outside, under a roof, fully protected from the rain, until 2009 when it was placed in this car, with a performance built 700R4...
We inherited this car, early 2020, with the car not having driven for about 5 yrs...
The car needs a lot of TLC, ongoing, tuning, adjustments of carb, and trans, cosmetic and functional restoration, of interior, HVAC system, a repaint, rear exhaust, rattles, squeaks, etc, and really, lots and lots of details. Exhaust, is stock style, dual crossover style muffler, tucked up, in the rear, behind the diff, with dual pipes...
Carpets and weatherstripping are factory original... Car has been repainted, it's original silver color, 2 or 3 times, since 1977... Black naugahyde seating surfaces were installed in 1985... original factory headliner, was removed 2 years ago... Car door windows leak water, if you take it thru an auto car wash, or heavy rain, comes down...
The car runs, better than it ever has, right now, but the hot start, issue needs a fix, and carb, engine, transmission tuning, also needs more dialing in, IMO.
However, It's just a big ongoing project, requiring, money, money, money, since I'm not a mechanic, or mechanical, and I am exiting, from this car, as I don't want to keep spending $ on it...
Literally, everywhere I go, pple comment, or ask about the car. Today i put 12 gallons in the tank, and a fellow gas station customer started asking me, about the car. It's almost like everytime, I take it out, and stop somewhere ... Pple also, occasionally, wave, etc, if you drive by...
I had new tune up parts, installed 12 mos ago... Best plugs, best wires, cap, rotor, under-car, large, gas filter, air cleaner, etc...
I've driven this car, at least 6 round trips, from Long Beach, to Palm Springs area, in the last 3 years, without a problem... As far as I can tell, it runs 80 MPH @ 2,000 rpm...
Tach, oil pressure, volts, guages, work...
Speedo, odo, clock, Heat, A/C, does not work...
Head-lites, work surprisingly well... Brake lites, turn signal, side marker lites, all work, tho R hand turn signal is more "iffy"...
Car has Rally Dash, tilt wheel, (off "axis", off center, by 90 degrees) and the dash top, has no cracks, whatsoever... Spare wheel, is a 205-65-15 "full size tire", but it's a smaller tire than stock, on a correct 15x7 rally wheel
Interior has had, passenger door panel, some dash parts, pulled, center console pulled, and i have most of them...
As far as I can tell, it does not burn oil, tho it does leak some... I had the oil changed, July of 2021, in Long Beach... I had them put in, straight 30 weight, oil... I just checked the dipstick, today... It's perfectly full, tho 1 quart was added about 9 mos ago, and it looks like it needs to be changed... I don't know, how many miles, it has been driven, since the odo does not work... I've probably driven it, 2-3k miles, in the last 3 years, but I'm not really sure.
The car has had 2 very minor, fender benders many years ago and i don't believe it's ever had any major damage..
All funds need to clear the bank, before the car moves. You will need to pick up the car, with-in 30 days, from auction close. Title is clean, in my wife's name, & the CA Plates and tags are current, thru late this year...
Bidders with less than 15 transactions, and/or less than 98% feedback, i will cancel your bids...
