Description for Volkswagen Rabbit 1981

Super classic Volkswagen rabbit diesel caddy with 5-speed transmission and topper (cargo bed cover). 50 MPG on the highway and about 45 average overall. This is a California car and doesn't appear to have ever seen a winter with snow. It was purchased in southern California new and was there until last year. It is rust free! The topper was purchased new with the car.It has the larger 18 gallon tank so the range is 750 miles or better. The carruns great, rives great, oesn't use or leak oil or coolant, oesn't overheat. It has factory AC (but not working) and aftermarket cruise control (not working), lock heater, nd trailer hitch. In the past year, he car has had new timing belt, ater pump, lternator, uel injection pump, ast-start glow plugs, ash speakersandrear shocks. It was also painted last year. The bed is coated with spray bed liner.

Now the negatives: The paint was handsprayed with spray cans so the finish has a poor finish. It looks good from a distance but you can see all the orange peel up close. You might have luck buffing it out or you might need to re-spray. I have a case of the red paint if you want to use it. The drivers seat has duct tape on the bottom, he headliner is out but I have it. The speedometer is not steady - the needle waves around and doesn't show consistent speed. The ashtray is missing. The tires are have about 3/4 tread on the front and 1/4 on the back. It has a spare.

Back in the day, had 2 different Rabbit diesels; one with the 4-speed and one with the 5-speed. The 5-speed is much superior. This shifter and transmission feels as good as the almost new ones I had then.

Se bought it last year to tow on a dolly behind our motorhome because it was about the lightest vehicle we could find but still could store stuff in the back. This year we sold the motorhome so we don't need it anymore.

You can see and drive it in St Charles, L.
