I bought this Westfalia camper in Nov 2010 from the Original Owners in Ohio, put it on a trailer and brought it to Arizona. In that 6 yearstime I have put about 9,000 miles on it driving it to the Post Office about 4 or 5 days a week. It does run and drive but it spent most of its life in storage and has quite a few needs if you wanted it drive it any distance. Sorry if this gets long, but I dont want there to be any surprises. First for the needs: - Last time an exhaust was put on it, they welded the flanges to the studs - yeah, I know. To fix it the engine needs to be pulled, studs cut and re-drilled. Exhaust has a few small holes - not overly loud yet.
- Original Owner told me it had stop leak in the anti-freeze because the head bolt seals had started to leak. Its common and I believe it being in storage. Should have new headgaskets put on when you have the engine out to fix the exhaust - as well as new injector hoses etc - they are 30 years old.
- Tires are from 2007 and are cracking, fronts are wearing like it has too much toe-in.
- Brakes - they work ok around town, wouldnt want to make a panic stop at highway speeds with them, again from sitting. Needs brakes all the way around. Last time I used the hand brake it stuck and I had to free it up, havent used it since.
- Battery still starts it every time but it is very old.
- CV joints really rattle when cold. I squeezed some grease into them but it could use new axle shafts.
- Boots on balljoints are ripped - could use front suspension parts
- Windshield is scratched and has some stone chips
- All the plastic and rubber seals around the windows are dried out, plastic parts inside are dried out and cracked or shrunk- rear view mirror wont stay on because the plastic is cracked around it. Skylight in top is cracked, leaks a bit in heavy rain. Headlight alignment plastic is broken, lenses wobble. Bumper ends cracked. It needs lots of new rubber and plastic trim stuff because of age.
- Speedometer is off by about 7-10 mph (reads higher than you are going). Fuel gauge quit working in August.
- Paint is very chalked. Line of surface rust on drivers side lower body seam, small rust spot by right rear window where a shovel left a small dent, left rear quarter has a dent where original Continental tire blew and beat against it. Body is in excellent condition being from the MidWest - would be an easy re-paint.
- I have only driven it more than 15 miles one way twice. The first time it started acting like it was fuel starving and wanted to stall after about 12 miles. It did stall when slowing down but started right up after. The second time it was fine on a 30 mile round trip. I did find the boot loose on the MAF sensor. It has never given me any problem around town.
The good: - Today (12-1) it has 70,947 (will have a few more when you come after it as I am still driving it)original miles on it - I have all paperwork to document it.In 1997 it had 60,600 on it - not much use lately.Around 28,000 miles the original transaxle was replaced under warranty.
- Automatic tranmission - good or not depending on your point of view - shifts fine, could use a fluid change though.
- Fridge, stove and sink all worked 6 years ago - have not tried them since
- It has AC, all hooked up, did work6 years ago. Still was an R12 system. Low on freon now and does not come on, could be converted to 134.
- Top canvas has no rips or tears, also have front privacy curtains.
- I have all recepits, original window sticker, both sets of original keys with original VW fobs, owners manuals and Bentley manual. Even have radio delete plate (it has original dealer installed cassette radio).
- Does not use any oil in the year between oil changes
- I have the table that goes between the front seats.
- Its pretty clean on the inside, not all beat up and would be an easy one to make very nice.
Basically, I would call it a running project. You know what they cost all restored or rebuilt, so here is a chance to get in before all the middle men and do it how you want. No, I would not suggest you drive it home across country (maybe yes if you are in the Verde Valley). Talk to UShip if you need it trucked, they have good rates. It just turned 30 years old and needs work and someone willing to spend some money on it. I bought it for a single purpose and it worked excellent and have held onto it longer than I hand planned. I really do hope someone can give it a good home....... Just a smalldeposit required (100.00)within 48 hours.
