Description for Volkswagen Thing 1973
1973 Volkswagen Thing Type 181. 1600 CC dual port w/ 2bbl carb. IRS 4 speed manual transmission. 4 wheel drum brakes . This is a 43 year old car based on 70 year old technology.
This THING is in very good condition. It does not currently show any signs of rust &seems to have beena fairly solid car before the restoration.
The paint job shows great. It has a nice shine to it and what better color than yellow ? It's yellow inside & out, as it was originally a yellow car, so no rattle can interior paint job here people. Aside from one little run on the dash board, I haven't seen any other runs, fish-eye, orange peel, trash, etc... It's a good finish for a driver quality classic car that you'll have fun with.
The interior is plain as they were intended to be. There's new vinyl seats, the floor boards have rubber mats over solid metal floors. The rest of the inside was painted yellow like the outside at the time of restoration. It looks really nice, you'll be pleased with it.
Brand spankin' new top
The electronics all work, the gauges, the horn, wipers, turn signals, etc... all that stuff works like it should, except the gasoline heater. That's just a nice conversation piece.
The engine is a 1600 cc dual port w/ a 2bbl carb that's a little cold natured, but runs great once it's warmed up. No knockin' rattling, ticking, poppin' smokin' or funny business. It just runs like it was designed to do. I have no records of it being rebuilt other than the usual verbalhand-me down info, but I think it'ssafe to assume it has been b/c itruns too good to be original. It does tend to mark its territory like all air cooled VW's, but it doesn't leak like OMG there's oil all over the place, I just wouldn't park it on top ofthe white shag rug carpet in the living room.
IRS transmission, shifts great & hums along like it should.
Brakes have been gone through & fine tuned. They work like they're supposed to.
My overall summary of the car... my personal opinion.... my 2 cents so to speak.... It's an above average driver quality classic car, that you can get in & drive right nowwithout any work. It's mechanically sound w/ a decent restoration, you can shine, show & enjoy without spending a fortune on some trailer queen or spending years on a restoration.. this one is good to go at great price & would look awesome under the Christmas tree this year.
