This elegant VW Cabriolet was found in the barn of the original owner around six years ago. The body and chassis on the car was in exceptional condition, with no rust and no rot anywhere to be found. It had a couple of small dents and dings that were pulled and picked to perfection, with the use zero bondo. Take your magnet to any part on the body or chassis on this car. Again these were very small dents and you will see how straight the body is in the pictures. All the body metal and pans are completely original to the car except for the rear lower exterior tail pan (between the two fenders in rear, underneath the rear engine lid) which was bent and easier to replace than try to restore.
The pans were phenomenally clean and needed no repair. The original undercoat on the pans was left intact, cleaned deliberately and repainted over with a similar type of undercoat color material. The original undercoating under the fenders was completely stripped to the metal while the body pieces were removed, showing all the original paint underneath. During the restoration the undersides of the fenders were repainted but not undercoated. We thought this would look better if someone wants to show the car. All the original welds can be seen in the rear and front body areas.
I have been restoring and collecting Porsche’s, Corvettes and VW’s for about 25 years and have also been involved in Judging cars at concour events. I had always wanted a Black/Black VW Cabriolet and was set to find the nicest body and original chassis that I could find. These little Cabs are getting harder and harder to find, especially in “no hit”… zero rust condition.
The body and paint work on the car are simply a 10. Close to 1000 hours of work went into the restoration of this vehicle.
A high-end single stage paint was selected to give the car a period correct finish, rather than the two-stage modern paint process that just does not look correct on cars from this period. It was blocked and blocked and then blocked again before any paint was ever applied. Every piece was painted off the car and then assembled. Time was given for the paint to cure and was color sanded and buffed to a mirror like flat finish.
The body and paint on this car is concour.
Every nut and bolt was attended to, the entire electrical system was replaced with a brand new harness. The suspension too was completely rebuilt using only top-quality parts, and of course, the entire braking system was replaced and/or rebuilt. All the rubber seals throughout were replaced as were all the hinges, bumpers, lights, molding, glass, wipers and door handles. Even the running boards are new. The top is all brand new high-end materials done by a local expert in Porsche and Mercedes Benz restorations.
The engine runs phenomenally for the original 1200cc 40 hp engine.
The car has plenty of power going up hills and drives straight down the road and brakes with authority. This is the nicest running early VW I have ever driven. It is brand new and feels like the day it rolled off the assembly line.
We like the “Euro-Look” of black wall tires and black wheels rather than the white-walls and white inner ring on the wheel that would have come on a US model. This Black on Black on Black Beetle is simply as good as it gets. It’s brand new and ready to go to a new home.
This is a No Reserve Auction and will sell to the highest bidder. I'm looking for a fast sale, so i don't sell it for profit. My asking price is between 23-28k. Thank you!!!
