Facts about this Rometsch Lawrence

Based off of a 1957 Volkswagen Beetle chassis number 1741493 with a production date of November 1957. This was the base of what Friedrich Rometsch started this 1958 Lawrence Convertible. This car has a Rometsch number of 518 which is an early round taillight car. It is one of the earliest Lawrence convertibles to survive. The car was formally owned by Phil Leadley who ran the worldwide Rometsch Registry. This car has been featured in many books and magazines over the years. The original engine was replaced with an Okrasa modified Volkswagen engine with an Abarth muffler. Aluminum body with all original and correct trim.

I have about 200 additional photos which I can share with a link. If you have any questions regarding this car please contact me with your question(s) and I will get back to you.

History of Rometsch:

Rometsch, one of Germany's oldest coachbuilders, was founded in 1924 and after World War II they started building Volkswagen based coupes and convertibles. Influenced by American styling, furniture designer Bert Lawrence's only car was introduced in 1957. These aluminum bodied cars required over 1,200 man hours to produced. These cars were sold in Berlin and Hollywood, CA. Production continued until 1961 when the Berlin wall separated the East German workforce from the West Berlin workshop.

Condition:

Very solid car with no known accidents or metal replacement. Original metal floors and original alloy body. Unmolested example of a true collector car. The car was detailed for the 2019 Amelia Island Concours and has been kept in pristine condition. The car is mechanically sound and drives very well. This is a very reliable car to take on any classic car rally or road trip. All instruments and gauges function properly. All the doors have an excellent fit. The under body of the car is solid with no rust and has never had rust or any sort of floor replacement. It is believed that the car had a paint job in the 80's and any nicks/imperfections were fixed with the original single stage lacquer finish. The interior and convertible top was replaced in 2018. This is a fully working car which is show quality. There are not many of these cars and especially not many which have been cared for and original as this one.
