This is a real deal steel 40 Willys 440 coupe that sits on the original frame. This car has extensive race history dating back almost 50yrs. It was known as "The Undertaker" and was mainly raced around northern Ohio. It ended up out west in the hands of the Hot Rod Ranch in Lompoc, CA. While it was out there, they had Kevin Perry (well known race car restorer) replace the floors and rear wheelwells with fresh new steel. Any and all rust has been replaced with new metal or rust free panels and was done correctly. After that was done, a deal was made, and The Undertaker was headed back to Ohio where it had dominated the drag strip so many years before. Once it arrived, the original chassis was boxed with custom boxing plates. A new 9in Ford rear axle was installed that houses heavy duty 35 spline axles, and a 4.56 posi unit. New drum brakes were installed also. The rear axle is located via chromed ladder bars and QA1 adjustable coilovers. A completely chromed front end was installed and looks amazing. Disc brakes help slow this beast down and work good. The steering box has been chromed as well. A brand new drivetrain was assembled at Cropper racing engines in Flemingsburg, KY. They built a new blown 383 stroker small block Chevy engine with Brodix heads. A brand new BDS 871 blower sits on a Weiand manifold. Dual Holley 660 carbs feed it. The engine made 685hp on pump gas on the engine dyno. A new aluminum radiator keeps it all cool. Power is fed through a lakewood SFI bellhousing and into a new Richmond "bullet proof" 6 speed manual transmission. The whole drivetrain is brand new and has less than one mile on it. The engine has test stand / dyno time and that is it. The wheels are new American Rebel Manf. polished halibrand style wheels. Tires are new all around as well. New front glass has been installed. I have new rear glass but have not installed yet. I have some misc trim and garnish moldings also. The rear decklid that is on the car is fiberglass along with the bobbed rear fenders. I have a very nice steel decklid that goes with the car ( I just didn't want to put holes in it for the pins) I have steel rear fenders also but they will need some work. Interior is bare bones like you would find in an old race car. It has 2 vintage racing seats, a removeable steering wheel, and a basic set of gauges to monitor the engine. The brake and clutch assembly are both Wilwood items.

All in all, this is an amazing piece of drag racing history that has been tastefully redone to capture what it was originally. This car has been a drag car for longer than it hasn't. I have several pictures of it racing that date back into the early 70s and possibly late 60s. It would be a great candidate to repaint it like it used to look, and be a hero at all the vintage drag racing events, NHRA events etc. I have several cars and projects so I am offering this one up for sale to "thin the heard" a little. If it does not sell, it will get put back in the shop and more work will get done. These steel Willys are getting harder and harder to find, especially with any kind of race history. I believe with a little bit more time and money, this car would be extremely valueable, more than it already is. It still needs some work to be a good street car (engine needs some final tuning, lights need to be wired, firewall put in, etc) but it is definately a car you can enjoy while you finish it to your liking.
