Description for BMW 3-Series 1973
On offer, BMW 1973 3.0CS coupe VIN 2240526, sold new in Santa Rosa CA in April 1973 and in the Bay area since. Purchased as a restoration project in 2014, but needs have changed and the car is now available. The car was in need of refurbishment when we obtained it, as it had been in long term storage. The brakes and cooling system were redone with new water pump, radiator and hoses as well as an upgraded fan clutch. Shocks were replaced as were parts of the front suspension, fresh tires were fitted and all the hydraulics were checked and made operational. The car starts easily and runs well without smoke or leaking. The 4 speed shifts smoothly and the car run cool and tracks straight. The antique York AC compressor needs replacement, and the speedometer works well but the odometer is intermittent, as are the right side power windows. The motor number matches the body VIN 2240526.
The most important feature when buying an E9 coupe is the body, and this body is remarkably sound and dry. There is evidence that the fenders and nose were replaced in the distant past, but the quality of the work is very good with the only clue of prior repair being a slipshod mounting of the LFF trim tab. The upper fenders are dry with no bubbling and the shock towers are solid and nice. The lower part of the fenders and doors are rustfree with no bubbling and the trunk is virginal. The floorpans are dry and solid with some superficial rust noted around the front pan 'portholes as all.
Cosmetically the car is mostly original and the leather shows it's 135K miles. The dash has one crack in the corner and the wood set is very nice. The windshield has a crack in the lower portion and will need replacement. The trunk toolbox is intact but sans tools. Paint need redo
In a nutshell, this car is a very desirable combo of Calif provenance and a blue plate, an attractive color and the correct options with 4 speed, AC and manual sunroof. Matching numbers. The body is exceptionally straight and without rust, and the car is complete. An excellent restoration candidate, or an occasional 'Cars and Coffee' weekend driver.
