Description for Chevrolet Chevelle 1970
In the hierarchy of the street, circa 1970, there were the ‘Big Dogs’ and then there was everyone else. The name of the game was horsepower and the more grunt the better, and more grunt meant more cubic inches & more horsepower. The old standard “there’s no replacement for displacement” was never truer in 1970, and sitting atop the muscle car food chain was Chevrolet’s Chevelle SS 454 LS6. Not just the garden variety, 360 horsepower SS 454, but the 'King Kong' of the Bow-Tie brigade, designated... RPO Z15. Checking off this option delivered a 450 horsepower, 454 cubic inch solid lifter behemoth that cranked out 500 Lbs./Ft. Torque and bludgeoned any challengers for its title as ‘King of the Street’. ‘Red Hills Rods & Classics’ is thrilled to offer you this absolutely gorgeous, frame-off restored, numbers matching, and fully documented 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 454 LS6, finished in arguably the most beautiful color combination of (Code 75) Cranberry Red wrapped around a perfect (Code 755) Black coated fabric bucket seat interior. Muscle car fanatics, does it get any better than this? For its 1970 models, GM lifted the 400ci ceiling on intermediates, and chose to punch out the venerable 427 to 454 cubic-inches and offered the hydraulic lifter LS5 rated at 360 horsepower and the solid lifter LS6. The LS6 used the same block as the LS5, however an 800-cfm Holley 4-barrel carburetor bolted to an aluminum manifold replaced the Rochester Quadra-Jet. The LS6 features a beefy bottom end w/ four-bolt mains, forged steel crankshaft & connecting rods w/ forged aluminum 11.25:1 compression pistons. Because of the LS6’s high 6500 redline, deep groove accessory drive pulleys were necessary. Either the Muncie M22 ‘Rock Crusher’ close ratio 4-Speed manual transmission or the 3-speed M40 Turbo Hydra-Matic automatic were available on the Chevelle LS6. This amazing Chevelle LS6 underwent a nut & bolt frame-off restoration, during which time all pertinent numbers were verified throughout the entire car to verify its ‘numbers matching’ status. It was sold to a gentleman in Texas after the restoration was completed and has been with the same owner until he recently passed away, when we were fortunate enough to acquire the car. The gorgeous color combination of Cranberry Red w/ Black stripes around a black interior are the same colors that were used for all of Chevrolet’s advertising & dealer brochures for their new 1970 Chevelle SS. This outstanding example left the factory with all of the important options that anyone would want in an LS6 including: (RPO Z15) SS 454 Package, (LS6) 454/450hp Motor, (M22) Rock Crusher Heavy-Duty 4-Speed Transmission, (GW8) 4.10 Performance Axle, (G80) Positraction Axle, (F41) Performance Suspension, (ZL2) Cowl-Induction Hood, (JL2) Power Disc Brakes, (U14) Gauge Package, and (D88) Hood & Deck Stripes (see original Build Sheet). The original sheet metal is smooth & straight all the way around the car and the beautiful Cranberry Red paint has been polished to a lustrous shine. All of the chrome & stainless trim is in show quality condition throughout. She sits on original 14” SS Rally Wheels wrapped w/ correct Firestone F70-14 RWL Polyglas tires, just like she did 47 years ago. You can walk around this car a hundred times and never find a bad angle. The undercarriage is beautifully detailed from front to back & from side to side w/ correct tags & markings. When you open the driver’s door you will find a completely restored and 100% factory correct Black bucket seat interior that harkens back to the days when these big-block brutes ruled the streets. Everything appears new & fresh from front to back, with that big Hurst shifter sitting at the center. The bucket seats, door panels, dash, carpet, etc., looks factory new throughout. All of the original gauges, lights, blinkers, AM radio, etc., are in perfect working order. When you are sitting in those high back bucket seats looking out over the factory Cowl Induction hood w/ your right hand firmly grasping that big Hurst shifter, let me say that it truly feels like 1970 all over again. I removed the brand new black OEM floor mats for most of the photos so that nothing is hidden from view. The trunk area is complete w/ correct Firestone F70-14 Polyglas spare tire mounted on the original 14” Rally Wheel, w/ the original jack assembly. Ok, let’s get to the heart of this beast, shall we? When you pull the pins and open the hood, you will find a beautifully detailed engine bay which houses the numbers matching 454/450hp LS6 motor (correct suffix code & partial VIN), which is linked to the numbers matching M22 ‘Rock Crusher’ 4-Speed transmission (correct Muncie stamp & partial VIN), which feeds power to the original asphalt shredding 4.10 Performance rear axle. Again, all drivetrain components have been verified, documented & photographed. It is of the opinion of the experts who have viewed these numbers/stampings, that the motor, transmission & rear axle are indeed numbers matching, which we agree with 100%. If you are a ‘serious’ buyer and wish to see these photographs, you can call me anytime and I will provide them upon request. Of course, the factory original build sheet goes w/ the car, not one of these ‘fake’ build sheets that you see so often these days. This beautiful LS6 fires up instantly and runs & drives like you would expect from one of the all-time great muscle cars. She’s got loads of power & torque and pulls HARD through all four gears. She drives beautifully w/ no rattles, squeaks or unwanted vibrations, even on skinny Firestone Polyglas tires. Documentation includes: original Owner’s Manual, original 1970 Chevrolet Service Manual, original 1970 Chevrolet Overhaul Manual, original Dealer Brochure, original Dealership Poster, stacks of receipts for restoration work performed, detailed number verification sheets, and of course, the factory original Broadcast Sheet. If you have been searching for an original numbers matching and fully documented 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 454 LS6 in the right color combination and the right options, you will be hard pressed to find a better example anywhere @ any price!
