Description for Pontiac Le Mans 1962
After nearly 40 years. I am downsizing my collection. closing my museum. and moving to smaller quarters. As such. I will be keeping just a couple of my favorite cars! Up for sale is an absolutely STUNNING Pontiac Tempest LeMans Sport Coupe! This car was owned by one family since the time it was new. then spent many years in an antique auto museum . It has since been in the hands of private collectors. It is from Georgia. It has never been subject to harsh winter driving or rust. This is an ALL ORIGINAL "SURVIVOR"! It is all stock. never modified or hot-rodded. The Tempest was the brain child of Pontiac muscle car legend John DeLorean. When introduced in 1961. it was very cutting edge. consisting of a "slant 4 cylinder" engine. which was actually a Pontiac 389 V8 cut in half length wise. Other "high tech" for the time features were fully independent suspension (front and rear). unit body construction. rear mounted transmission and differential. and flexible curved drive shaft. Also. the car received full sized 15 inch wheels. These features virtually eliminated the front interior transmission "hump". and made for a nearly perfectly balanced car with equal weight distribution front and rear. This resulted in a car with surprising power. given it's size. great firm sure-footed ride. and excellent handling characteristics. while delivering great fuel economy on regular gas. So impressed were auto enthusiasts. that Motor Trend Magazine awarded the car it's prestigious "Car of the Year" award. Originally the Tempest was offered only as a 4 door sedan or station wagon. In late 1961. a 2 door sedan emerged. When the 1962 models came out. for the first time. a lively 2 door sport coupe was offered as a top of the line model. This car was called LeMans and would be the first of many sporty Pontiacs to carry the name. These cars formed the basis of the experiments by John Delorean and Jim Wangers that culminated in the 1964 introduction of the legendary GTO! These early LeMans cars are very hard to find. especially in such pristine condition as this one! This beauty has 44. 00 miles. has always been garage or museum kept. and would easily pass for 15 or 20 thousand in my opinion! It is by far one of the cleanest original cars I have seen and owned in my 40 years in the classic car hobby. It has won several awards for its condition and originality as a "Survivor" It has all original body panels. floor and trunk panels etc. with no patch panels or rusted out areas. The Surf Turquoise paint just gleams! Ditto for the chrome and bright work. Has correct original 15 inch wheels with hub caps and beauty bands. as well as correct wide whitewall tires (last year wide whites were offered). Original spare and tire tools are in trunk and look un-used. Under hood is all stock and tidy original looking. Original interior looks great! Seats and door panels are still snow-white looking. not faded or dingy like most. Carpet and dash also look great. including chrome trim on dash. Still has all 4 original T-3 headlights! This LeMans is equipped with the 195 cubic inch "slant 4". with a 3 speed manual transmission with it's original floor mounted shifter (wide ratio). Also has deluxe 2 speed wipers. deluxe heater and defrost. and deluxe all-transistor push button radio. Everything works on this car from the wipers to even the backup lights! Engine starts quickly and runs smoothly. Snappy power in all gear ranges. Clutch does not slip. and transmission works fine in all gears. Car rides and handles very well. No smoke or strange leaks etc. Brakes also operate well with no issues that I have seen. I have driven this car both on a trip and local driving. I have been getting 19 to 20 mpg local and got 24 mpg on a trip. Pretty impressive for a 53 year old car! This is a true piece of important automotive history that you are not likely to find in this quality and condition anytime soon! It should be preserved for future generations. and it would be great if it ended up in a museum again sometime in the near future. Cars like this are few and far between! This is the best of all worlds. You can take it to car shows and cruise ins. display in your own collection or museum. take it on vintage tours. or if so inclined. use it as a regular vehicle. Much better and much cheaper to buy and own than today's computerized plastic overpriced cars. Doesn't have to pass any complicated state inspections. and these cars have a very devoted following from the "Little Indians" chapter of the Pontiac Club. Also these vintage Pontiacs have an excellent parts support network through vendors such as Ames Performance Engineering. Most importantly. you are buying a moderately priced quality car that will NOT depreciate in value. and with reasonable care. will actually appreciate as time goes on. Most importantly. remember. nice stock vehicles are where the vintage car hobby is headed. Anyone with a big checkbook can restore a derelict from the "dead". but they are only original and stock ONCE! If someone GAVE you a "project vehicle" you could not restore it for what you can buy this "turn key" car for! They just don't come along like this very often. Don't miss it!IMPORTANT: This car is from Georgia. and that state does not issue titles for older cars like this. just registrations. Accordingly. this car will be sold with the Georgia registration and a notarized transfer and bill of sale. Please make sure that this is acceptable where you live BEFORE BIDDING. Thank you.
